Endometriosis back after 6 months? |
I had a Laparoscopy done in February 2007 to diagnose and treat Endometriosis. My doctor confirmed that I had Stage 4 and cleaned out the adhesions as best as she could. I thought this would alleviate some of the pain I get each month, which it has on some level. However yesterday I had another one of those attacks where I was totally incapacitated drenched in cold sweats and I felt like someone was wringing out my insides like laundry. How can this happen? Is my endo back in full swing after 6 months? (My previous "attack" was Nov 2005, so it had been a while). I'm sorry to say but it does often come back, there is no cure and in many times it can come back quick. I've had endo for close to 13 years and have tried to learn as much as I can about it after realizing just how misunderstood it really is by most obgyns. Here is the problem, besides all of the other misconceptions there are, most dr.'s do not believe that you can remove all of the endometriois, or they use a technique to remove it which is basically "burning" it off. Most dr.'s who perform the laps may not be knowledgable enough in the disease that they recognize all of the many of the colors that endo can take so they may actually believe that they removed it all but in fact, they missed some that did not have the appearance of "textbook" endo. Also, dr.'s who do not use excision as their method usually use the burning method, unfortunately burning off the endo does not typically remove the deepest layers of the disease. And since the extint of the disease does not correlate with the amount of pain an individual experience, it is unfortunately common that many women find that the surgery did not take away their pain or find it comes back within 1-2 years or for some, even less. the closest thing to a cure for endo is to be properly treated by an endo specialist that will thouroughly excise the disease, someone who recognizes all of the many forms endo can take. The specialists have a roughly 80% success rate 5 years after surgery, other obgyn's have a roughly 30% success rate-big difference. What makes it even harder for women is that there is only a handful of experts in the country and many do not take insurance, are out of network and usually require some travelling. Most women usually see their regular obgyn and find themselves having surgery ever so many years or using powerful and often times dangerous drugs such as Lupron. I would try yahoo's endo group or other sites such as obgyn.net to try to locate a specialist in your area. Dr David Redwine is internationally known for his expertise in endo and is the pioneer of excision surgery. Dr Andrew Cook is also very well known-both have websites where you can find some great information and both do record reviews. These dr.'s focus on women with endo or pelvic pain and I have yet to find a women that was disappointed with the treatment they received from them. I wish you the best of luck and hope you find relief soon. I have heard that if the dr. doesnt remove it all, it can come back however I havent heard of it coming back this soon. I would contact your dr. again. |
