Adhesions?????? |
What percentage of women form adhesions after abdominal surgery? How likely is it to form adhesions? Adhesions is another name for scar tissue as far as I'm aware for those who don't know. I don't think anyone can give you absolute statistics on the percentages. I do know a great many women form some sort of adhesions post-operatively after either abdominal or pelvic surgery, studies suggest something like over 90% of people form some sort of adhesions post operatively. Anytime you cut the skin, or any other part of the body, scar tissue forms. It's a fact of healing, a normal response of the body to protect against future injury. The problem lies in how the scarring forms and where, and women who require abdominal or pelvic surgery usually already have an inflammatory process ongoing that is the reason for the surgery to begin with. Both those things together would make adhesions more likely to form. If you have an appendectomy, you are not as likely to form adhesions as if you are having surgery to treat PID, inflammatory bowel problems, or something like that. And surgeries performed with keyhole incisions, like to remove a gallbladder, don't usually cause problems either. But the more invasive the procedure, the more likely it is to occur. And there really aren't any good ways to prevent it happening, except for the surgeon to try to limit the amount of insult done to the cavity. And even though adhesions may form, there are many for whom it doesn't cause a problem. For those that do have troubles, there are procedures to attempt to release the adhesions. But unfortunately, nobody can guarentee you won't form adhesions, all they can do is try to release them if they become a problem. I'm just curious, but could you e-mail me and tell me what adhesions are? Sorry that this isn't an answer, but I just want to know. what is Adhesions? adhesions will only b known to xist if they produce symptoms. there may be many not causing symptoms , so how can we know? |
