Is it scary to get your adenoids out?

I might have to get my adenoids out and I am wondering if it is scary. My mom is telling me i'll be ok but i have had a cronic sinus infection since may, about 8 1/2 months. I think I will get the surgery so will you tell me if it is scary??

Hi Sarah,

I just had brain surgery exactly 1 month ago. I was very scared and that is because I did not know the outcome of what I would be like when it was all done. Brain surgery is a complicated operation and they gave me all the things that might happen or go wrong... but all went fine and I left the hospital within a week.

I would suggest to find out if you need your adenoids out, talk to your doctor about EXACTLY what will happen. For my operation I was put to sleep and didn't remember anything... adenoids are a very common operation... and I would not worry... it's easy to say but those types of surgery's are done all the time as routine.

My son had his adenoids out and he said that his throat was sore.. but you get pain medication to be taken at home. I also had my tonsils out when I was 26, it was not scary it just hurt a lot and the doc gave me some pain syrup to make it feel better.

I wouldn't say you should be scared about having an operation... just be well informed about what will happen... and if you are really nervous about it.. you can ask the doc to give you a mild sedative BEFORE you get to the hospital... I had to take a Valium.. and I was calm and relaxed before I even got to the hospital.. I am sure you will be fine. Good luck and don't worry. : )
