I am getting my tonsils and adenoids out. What should I get to eat/drink after the surgery?

I am getting my tonsils and adenoids out. What should I get to eat/drink after the surgery?

It will be extremely painful to swallow anything for the first few days after your surgery, and at first you will be really tempted not to swallow anything- including your own spit. Anything cold will feel good running down your throat, but you should stay away from soda as the acid and fizz will make it hurt worse. Dairy products like ice cream usually make the mucus feel thicker and may make you want to gag- so I'd advise not trying the old ice cream bit. The long skinny freezer pops go down easy and help keep your fluid level up until eating becomes more appealing. Jello, pudding, cottage cheese and yogurt, mashed potatos, all usually go down soft on the throat. Warm soup of any sort is also not a bad idea- the various "cream of" kinds and broth based both. Note I said warm, not hot. Although some folks do find hot liquids comforting after a day or so- just wait and see what sounds best to you. Ice cubes to suck on and let the cold liquid run down your throat. Hard candies are good too. Those help keep the throat moist and heal a bit faster. If you avoid drinking because it hurts, your mouth and throat will dry out and make it hurt worse.
If you are having day surgery and coming home after you wake- you can take advantage of left over surgical painkillers to have one last good meal. You won't be able to feel well enough for it to hurt much, and can lay in a stomach full to last you a day or so. Just do it before the medications wear off. Unfortunately, if they keep you overnight you won't have this option.

I also hope you have somebody who really loves you to take care of you for a few days afterwards. You will likely drool all over the pillow for a few days, so make sure you have plenty of pillowcases and a waterproof case for your pillow.

You won't notice anything but your throat, on the good side. Having adenoids out doesn't seem to cause much discomfort, although you may notice you breath easier through your nose.
Before you leave the hospital, ask the doctor if you can use the throat spray that numbs up sore throats- if you can, the cherry flavored stuff for kids will help you get a little relief for a short while- long enough to have a drink and bit to eat. When our son had his out, the doctor recomended we use it the first day or so, so I could get him to drink. Good luck, and take heart- it will only last for a few days. And you'll never get tonsilitis again!

Anything cold, nothing rough, plenty of ice cream. When I had mine out my dad cooked me chili, I defiantly wouldn't recommend it.

You will get the same as everyone else. There is no icecream and jelly anymore. They like you to eat rough foods as this helps the back of the throat heal, as swallowing food scrapes the wound clean.

THE GOOD NEWS is: You get cold drinks and all the Ice Cream you can eat.

THE BAD NEWS is: You feel too badly to eat or drink any of it.

all ice cream you can eat and jell-o all the thing that are cold but no pop it will make thing worse

Ice cream

ice cream and cold jello--soothes it out.

well from experience i ate a lot of ice pops cuz the ice cream will make you cough and cause irritation. So anything really cold or jello. Watch out for really hot soups and hot food items. good luck!

Popsiciles and icecream

When I got mine out i just had jello and warm/cool soups for a week.

dry toast, popcorn, or shredded wheat biscuits!!!faster it hurts the faster yu get well?
