My daughter is having her tonsils and adenoids removed........? |
Has anybody ever went through this with their child? What were they like after surgery? What are some good foods to feed them? My daughter does not like things like ice cream and popsicles, what else can I give her? Are they in a lot pain? Give me all the details, I am so nervous and scared for her. My daughter is 4 and she is having them taken out because she gets strep throat so often. My little girl had that surgery when she was 3. It saved her life!!! Plain applesauce is good to have her eat. or even warm chicken broth. When she starts talking again her voice will sound pretty nasely but with time it will go back to normal. I am going to go out on a limb here and say: i had mine out when i was very young. my mother gave me ice cream, pudding and jello the first few days. i seem to remember eating soup and mashed potatoes. Ask the doctor what she can have! Jello is a good thing. The younger the person is when having this type of operation, the better. Depends on the age of the child. Soft foods like applesauce or even baby food is good. Fruit smoothies are great. Just make sure she's getting enough fluids. Yes, there's pain but it's manageable. Go for distractions like videos or books. i have when i was12 so give cold pudding because she'll need it. it's not bad but it does hurt to sallow she'll be ok i afew day's Don't know what it's like now but it was painful. However I believe they don't give ice cream now, they give toast - it's better apparently. I had my tonsils done, but the funny thing is that I snore and my brother who is much fatter doesn't. He had his adenoids out as well. We got over it, it wasn't pleasant but you're a bit doped after the surgery so time went quick I had my tonsils out and it didn't do *^%@. Since it didn't help anything, they wanted to take the adenoids out. At 28 years old I had mine tonsils out and my recovery was not easy. More than anything I slept a lot. Ice cream wasnt good since the dairy produces phlegm. I atepopsicles, soup and jello. Jamba juice was good but you cant use a straw. i was out of work for a week but it took about 2-3 weeks for my throat to feel totally normal again and about that same amount of time before I had the desire to eat things other than soft foods out of fear of making my throat bleed. Try soft food like puddings, mashed potatoes, and applesauce. When I had mine out they gave me Vernor's gingerale. She will be fine .It will end up with a sore throat but nothing big.No complications. I went through it. I did really great on sherbet, crushed ice. They said no straws. The gave me liquid Tylenol 3 with codeine. Shake it really really well. I had my tonsils and adenoids removed in two operations when I was very young. I had a similar surgery when I was five. They had to fix my voice-box as well. It was not unbearable, hurt to swallow and talk, but we do live through it. They gave me cold 7-up and ice cream which I didn't want. Maybe you could get her a Slurpee or a smoothie when she feels up to it. Otherwise be strong and support her the best you can. Its not the food or drink a child wants after surgery, it is being comforted. Just don't let her see your nerves because it will worry her and be tougher for both of you. Good luck to you both. My son had his tonsils/adenoids removed when he was 6 and I don't recall any kind of complaint about pain or distress of any kind. It sure helped his breathing during sleep and he is mildly asthmatic. You don't say what your daughters' age is but have some childrens Tylenol around if she develops a fever or pain. Talk to the surgeon also, I'm sure he will advise you on post surgery procedures. Don't worry she'll be fine. :) I was 6 years old... that would be 1953. They rolled me into the operating room and put a mask over my entire face that smelled like rotten carrots. I breathed deeply and counted backwards to 10 and I was out. When I woke up I got to eat cold soft things like sherbet. That's probably why it took me years to like sherbet. Then they brought in a jar with my tonsils and adenoids in formaldehyde and gave it to my dad. I stayed in the hospital a week. I spent another week eating jello, sherbet, soft scrambled eggs, and pudding. I actually enjoyed the experience! My throat was a bit sore, but it healed quickly. Well I have never had them out or known anyone who has. But I do know that cool foods will be better to help keep swelling down. Soft foods will also cause less irritation which will cause less pain and also less swelling. Your physician or surgeons off should provide you a list of post-surgical instructions and a list of good nutrition options. Boost drinks may be a good option, they had me drink that after having all four of my wisdom teeth taken out at the same time. i have had my tonsils removed. It is not that painful but it helps alot better if you had cold thinks to drink. Eating ice cubes are also good. You can try cold fruit drinks and any kind of drinks with acid. Don't try soda that burns your throat. |
