How can i open up my throat to breathe?

i have an infection in my tonsils and my adenoids thats causing the to swell and tighten my airways in my throat, making it difficult to breathe. i went to the emergency room and they gave me steriods to help kill the infection, but for now it is very difficult to breathe. what are some things i can do to help take the swelling down?

the steroids should be helping and if they aren't go back to emergency

Gargle with warm salt water, drink hot tea. Tea or coffee is good to open the airways.

Breathing is essential to life, if you are having difficulty breathing you need to go to the ER. If you can't get a ride then you should call an ambulance. Steroids reduce the inflammation but can make the infection worse. If you are having difficultly breathing that is a medical emergency. Go to the ER right now, maybe a different one than you went to before. They shouldn't have sent you home with difficulty breathing.
