What Should I do before and after tonsil surgery/removal? |
On June 12, I am getting my tonsils and adenoids removed and that little thing under my tongue cut. My question is how should I prepare for it and what can I do after it. (like swimming) I am 13 Years old i got my tonsils removed when i was 6, so i dont really think i did anything beforehand to prepare for it. afterwards i felt really tired for a few days and my throat was kind of sore. i couldnt really eat solid food for a few days either because of my throat, so i ate soup and baby food. so make sure you get plenty of rest, and if you have a sore throat you can try eating ice cream or soup. good luck! You don't say how old you are, but I am assuming you are an adult. Make sure you are adequately hydrated before surgery. Drink plenty of fluids a couple days before surgery and don't take any medications that have aspirin in it at least 5 days before surgery. You don't want your blood to be too thin and not clot readily so avoiding aspirin in it will help. If you are on any blood pressure medications or meds for your heart please take them the day of your surgery. You can take them with water with no problem. As far as after surgery, you will not feel like doing anything for the first couple of days and you must take it easy the first 10 days or so. Then you can gradually go back to swimming. We do not want that to happy. I had my tonsils and adenoids out when I was about 6 years old so I don't think that I did much to prepare, perhaps only made to fast. After I was given ice cream and jello to eat because my throat was sore. Times and ideas change and I know of a surgeon now who insists on giving his patients potato chips (crisps) after their operation. His logic is the same as for not binding broken ribs as irritation makes thing heal quicker due to increased reaction. Ask you doctor, as they all have different pre and post op. regimes. |
