Our 4 year old granddaughter has a persistent night cough.?

The pecuilar thing is that this wet cough seems to occur 4 or 5 hours into her sleep cycle and lasts from 1 to 3 hours. She has seen an ENT specialist and had alergy tests but no cause has been established. She often has a runny nose, sometimes clear and sometimes thick. Specialist says she does have a slightly enlarged adenoids. This condition has persisted for approximately 2 years.

Hi Hopeful

Here is an answer on a coughs. They are not what people think. I would think about cleansing the bowels for better health for your granddaughter. Toxins sit in the colon and get in the blood, this is what causes illness and disease. Drink a gallon of water a day as well to rid of the toxins.

Cause
This is often caused by a stomach disorder that comes from overloading the system with food, wherein fermentation in the stomach causes phlegm. It may also be induced by inflammation in the bronchial tubes due to a neglected cold. Worms may be the cause. Many coughs are from a nervous condition, where coughing may eventually become habitual. Coughs are highly misunderstood. Usually a sore throat and coughing are caused by the sinuses draining the eustachian tubes, which is like pouring acid down the throat. A cough usually comes from a lowered vitality in the system from improper diet, loss of sleep, lack of exercise, and fresh air, improper breathing, poor elimination, or improper night clothing and bedding.

Herbal Aids
1.General Instructions: Acute coughs can often be relieved with a little honey and onion syrup. When it is the result of an old acute condition, clear out the morbid condition as rapidly as possible without causing irritation. In old cough conditions, comfrey with vervain or mullein are very good. The antispasmodic tincture is also excellent, and it is good to massage the chest area across the back with an antispasmodic tincture during attacks of spasms. Antispasmodic tincture may be used both internally and externally as a liniment on the throat. If this is due to a neglected cold, any of the diaphoretic herbs are excellent. To relieve the coughing spasms, use horehounds, comfrey, or a small amount of lobelia. High enemas of herbal laxatives will relieve congestion of the bowels, and if the cough is severe (asthma, whooping cough) load the stomach with liquids and induce vomiting.

Best of health to you

My 7 yo son has the same thing. Our pediatrician suggested 1 1/2 tsp. of Benydryl Allergy at bedtime. This should dry the secretions that maker her cough. The sinus is always producing mucous and doen't sleep when we do. If that doesn't work another OTC that can be used is CTM. It is in a small pill form and drys sinuses REAL good. I hope you have good luck with it.

Try children cough drops

My nephew had a similar problem at that age. Try using a humidifier in her room.

my 5 yr old niece has the same problem, we bought a hot air humidifier and use vicks air in it and she stopped the first night, try it it might work, if not it sure wont hurt,,.,,,

There is an allergen in the house.
Soap, plants, animals, dust mites, cigarette smoke, detergent on her pillow case, fabric softener, powder, etc. If you suspect any of these items then eliminate them all and see what happens. If her cough desists then reintroduce each item one at a time and determine which one it is that's making your granddaughter suffer.

Cough is caused by a number of ailments.
It can be treated by over the counter medicines
or home remedies. More information available
