My 3 year old daughter suddenly can't breathe well thru her nose and has had a runny? |
nose and cold symptoms for about a month. She just started pre-school and the teacher blames it on the exposure to other kids but my pediatrician says she may have enlarged adenoids and prescribed Flixonaise nasal spray every day for 3 weeks. Both pediatrician and ENT specialist say her adenoids may need to be removed--but that I should try the Flixonaise regimen first. Doesn't this sound like too strong a med for a little girl? What are the complications? Is it wise to give my young child a STEROID for so long? My son also had problems with runny nose cough congestion it seemed like an eternity. I almost bought stock in Kleenex and Puffs....lol. He was even hospitalized for the condition. He was on every med I think known to man kind for allergies. I finally had had enough and told his pedeatrician I wanted to see an ENT specialist. He told me that was his next option, go figure. We went to the ENT and he recommended removal of the tonsils and adenoids. The surgery went well and after about a week the pain was gone for good. He has not been sick since no runny nose nothing and has been almost a year since surgery. Don't let the child being young dissway you from the surgery. It is actually better to do it when they are young than to wait until they are older. Is there a possibility she's having an allergic reaction (attack)? It could be pre-school, my daughter would usually only get sick once a year. She has been in pre-school for 2 months and has been sick twice now!!! And im sure there are a lot more to come! I am not a doctor, but it would seem normal for her nose to be inflamed or enlarged after so long of an infection (a cold for a month or more). Sounds like you might like to get a second opinion on this one. If she hasn't had a temperature then it's not virus related, there fore chances are it's an allergic reaction to something. Has the Pre-school got a pet dog or cat. Or do one of the other students have the hair of their animal on their clothes. Check out all the possibilities before consenting to putting her on such a strong medicine. Or to an operation! No, it doesn't sound like too strong a med. Fluticasone, a corticosteroid, is the active ingredient in Flixonaise and is prescribed for 3 & 4 years olds and older. If by complications you mean adverse effects (and you should've found these out before now) the most common are headache, sore throat (pharyngitis), URI, and thrush (oral candidiasis). Fluticasone is used as a maintanence preventive asthma med so it can used long term. I used that nose spray on my 7 yr old, and I didn't find it to help . I had her adenoids removed, and that gave her some relief. I would feel more confident to get another specialist's opinion on removing the adenoids, just to feel that it was justifiable that they are enlarged and are causing your child breathing difficulty. Your pediatrician says her adenoids "may" be enlarged? Well are they or aren't they? I don't know why doctors are allowed to make such speculative answers and just give our children medicine that may not make a bit of difference when the condition is what should determine what the child needs. I think you should get another opinion. As far as the medicine, you should investigate it on line to determine what the negative effects could be.In the condition that adenoids need to be removed- I don't see the need for the nose spray, unless it's an anti-inflammatory. |
