I have a 6 1/2yr old who just had her tonsills/adenoids out last Monday. Anyone have problems after surgery?

She had her surgery last Monday. She was admitted to the hospital on Friday for dehydration. She was also vomiting and had a fever. She came home Saturday. She still doesn't/won't eat. She normally has a very big appetite. I have to force her to drink. I bought everything they said to give her: popsicles, jello, noodle soup, sherbert, pudding, kool-aid. We saw the ENT today and he said that her throat is very dry even after all the fluids I've been pushing( Atleast 8oz total every hour). He also said she's at higher risk for bleeding when the scabs start falling off. Anyone else have problems post-op? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

i had my tonsils out last year and it was an experience all in itself. i remember not having an appetite to eat because the pain medication made me feel nauseous. i was prescribed a syrup but it was difficult to take because it burned my throat. strangely, it was less uncomfortable to swallow a pill (which i later requested). my doctor recommended that i drink water as well as sports drinks to keep hydrated. for the week after my surgery, i ate watermelon and cantaloupe because it was all i could handle. (they also have a high water content so that was a plus). i would also eat and drink as much as i could as soon as the pain medication kicked in so the pain would be more tolerable.

i was 25 when i got my tonsils out and it was a miserable experience. even though i knew that it was in my best interest to keep hydrated, the pain was so bad that i couldn't bring myself to do it. i hope she starts to feel better soon.

When I had mine taken out I had to go back for dehydration too...then they gave me some tylenol liquid and everything went down..I couldn't eat for days...I also start to cough up or vmit dried blood...they doctor said it was normal but still scary....the main thing is make sure you keep her years clean and if you see any signs of blood in the ear go right to the hospital. I hope this helps

tried ice cream? and don't rush her. your throat can be very, very sore after surgery.... give her a crazy straw and lots of juices.

Ive heard of people having pieces still attached even after surgery...sounds maybe like she may have in infection if she has a fever (you normally dont have a fever unless there is an infection). I would ask the doctor for some antibiotics (they have liquid forms available for children if you ask, and some pahrmecies will flavor it if you ask them to.) One thing my mom tried when I was little was jello water (make up the jello but make it a little more watery and give it while warm before it sets). Also, maybe try having her just suck on ice cubes...as they melt the water will go down her throat and possible soothe it a bit.
