Thyroid Cyst? - Doctors & Nurses?

Almost three years ago my daughter had a tonsillectomy & adenoidectomy. Approx 8 months later she developed a lump at the base of her throat, she didn't tell us anything about it initially, until it grew in size.

Tests proved it was a 3 1/2 cm thyroid cyst which was aspirated using FNA last December. We were told by the Endocrinologist these normally do not come back.

Now it's 9 months later and she has the same lump in the same location. She says it's getting bigger really fast. This was just brought to my attention this evening. She is now 20 y/o.

My questions are:
1) Could the thyroid cyst be a complication of tonsillectomy/adenoidectomy?
2) How common is it for a thyroid cyst to come back?
3) Will anti-biotics help?
4) Should we see the same Endocrinologist? We were not comfortable with that particular doctor, but he does have her records.

1) A thyroid cyst is definitely not a complication from having a
T/A.
2) Rare, but it can happen.
3) No, antibiotics do not affect a cyst.
4) Yes, definitely see the same endocrinologist. They already are familiar with the past diagnosis and treatment. Continuing care with the same professional is important. These folks are specialists and as such may be a little weird or not have the best personalities, but they're smart.

4. No- you just call your old doctor's office and tell them to fax your records to the fax number of the new doctor, easy as that.

Probably not a complication of earlier surgery
Thyroid cysts come back.
Antibiotics won't help unless doctor finds an infection.
Choose a new endocrinologist if you are not comfortable.

I can tell you from personal expierence you have to call your Endo. They are sometimes rare to come back but they can and without concern. I also have a nodule mine is being treated with medication. But my levels are also off. But I can tell you that you Endocrine system regulates alot more than just metobolism. Because of this issues with my thyroid my hair falls out, i m real tired, my menstrual cycle has ceased. its a big deal nothing to play around with. The worst case senerio if her nodule was not cancerous before and i pray is not this time is that they aspirate again or remove the thyroid. I am not a doctor , but going through simular problem. And certainly not telling you what to do. But I would 100 % call the endo because he is going to want to rule that out.

If not comfortable with that doc. You can find another and they will transfer your records when yougo to see the new one the nurse will call over and you will sign a release form and they can fax it to new doc. You never have to stay with some one you dont like. Your in charge you pay the bills. They are there to assist you.

She needs to be examined by another Endocrinologist, I don't think that the prior surgery has anything to do with what is going on with her thyroid now, she should have the lump aspirated again and have it tested, she may end up having her thyroid removed if it is abnormal, they can check it out by doing a blood test, in most cases they can put her on thyroid medications if needed and the lump will disappear.
