My son is scheduled for tonsilectomy/adenoidectomy. What can I expect with comps/ recovery time, etc...? |
He's 4 1/2. And mom is worried!! I had mine removed in 2000 at age 30, lol. I know, old for that. Hey, my sister just had hers removed last year at 36, lol. Anyway. Firebug is right, nothing with milk. It coats the throat, but does not soothe it. Warm liquids actually felt better than cold. Although cream of wheat and broth were very soothing. Warm liquids like tea or gargling with warm salt water was extremely delightful to my throat. It felt like a warm bath for my throat. I know it goes against doctor's directions but limit cold things like popsicles or anything that is frozen, ice water is ok, ice is not that good. Requires too much work for the throat muscles. And make sure you give nothing with acid like juice of any kind nor colas, they contain acid also. Children heal faster from this than adults. Your child might have a hard time swallowing the liquid pain medicine, you might have to force it. But if they go for more than 2 days with limited fluid intake, call the doctor. However a hug goes a long way. Just a note, do not give your child aspirin nor ibuprofen; they can thin the blood, not good with a big sore in the throat. But if pain medicine does not help, don't feel ashamed about calling the doctor, that鈥檚 what they are there for. I called the doctor almost every day, except on the weekend. I couldn't eat for a week, I didn't complain about that, lol. Don't forget to brush the teeth twice a day even if your child protests. just make sure they are in a position that would not allow them to swallow. A warm damp towel around the throat helped more than a cold compress. But I would change between the two. But don't for food for a day or so, he will be alright. Do not use a straw for anything he drinks, too much work for the throat. For children, I understand from people I know that had theirs removed as kids, they said recovery time was anywhere from 3-5 days. But everyone is different, some took less than one week others took no longer than 2 weeks. Just remember the number one medicine you should give are attached to your shoulders and has a heart in the middle, administer that liberally. Sure you might be tired but it will be a good tired. You are the most important thing he will need. My son had that done back in 1990, he was 5. Things have progressed since then. His was out patient, and he was better in a couple of days. Expect soreness, he will be cranky, depending on his age, you will just have to comfort him. DO NOT give him any milk products for about a week, as the milk products coat the throat and can cause more irritation. If he is still a youngling, have his favorite toy ready when he wakes up. Give the healing at least a week. Good luck. not sure this the answer your looking for but: I had the same operation when i was about 9 or 10, i have no recollection of anything about it. He will come thru it just fine. about three days shold do it.Watch for bleeding from the mouth or nose..a nice liquid and very smooth food diet...icecream yogurt warm cream soups nothing to hot and no lumpy or crispy stuff...watch swallowing reflexes..they can choke easily...dont be surprised to see some dried old blood in the nostrils or sputum...we just dont want to see bright flowing blood. If you catch your boy swallowing or gulping alot investigate with a flashlight in the back of his throat..you will get a pretty clear view.Watch for fever or redness and swelling in the throat. Keep him quiet for a few days no yelling or screeching...he will be alright...5 days max |
