Adult Tonsillectomy/Adenoidectomy?

I'm having my surgery this week and wondered if anyone had anything to tell me about what to expect. Any ideas for diet, other than ice-cream?
My doctor told me that since i'm 30, I should expect this to be kind of rough. Is it really that bad?? Any thoughts/suggestions would really be helpfull.
Thanks!! ; )

No, i'll be under a general anestesia (sp?) So the surgery itself, I will not remember, it's the recovery time i'm worried about.

I had my tonsils out when I was 25...

Here is what I remember from mine...
First I remember them wheeling me into the operating room and asking me to count backwards from 10... I only remember getting to about 7, I was out.

When I awoke... now I don't want to scare you but I am a very honest blunt person... OMG!! It was horrible pain!! When you first come out it WILL be rough, especially cause you are older. I felt like a HUGE baby, I had watched kids I knew deal so much better that I did!! My dr. also told me it was because of my age. You will be groggy too. You also may have an upset stomach at first. I remember my neck being sore also.

To swallow is excruciating, even swallowing your own saliva is VERY painful!! Ice Cream and Ice chips are very helpful!! DO NOT try to speak at first you will only hurt yourself, so bring a pad of paper and a pencil or something if you will have your family there. I was in the hospital for about 2 days. I remember having a little bit of ear pain shortly afterwards, but was told that it was normal, and it did go away. Days 2-7 post-op will probably be the worst!! You also may have difficulties sleeping.

On the bright side... Since having my Tonsillectomy I have been the healthiest I have EVER been my entire life since... before I had it done I was in the hosp EVERY winter with severe strep throat to the point sometimes of almost literally dying, and I was just always getting sick. Now... I hardly EVER get sick. I am actually MUCH happier with out em, I am so much more healthier!!

Ok diet... let's see... You will have to survive on MUSH for a little bit... drinking will hurt at first, but try jello, pudding, gingerale if you can handle the bubbles, of course water, popsicles, mashed potatoes, broth or soup (not tomato soup though), saltines or other crackers that are mushed in a broth or soup, slushies, smoothies, gatorade, AVOID anything acidy... such as anything citrus ( OJ, pineapple juice, ect)... it WILL burn!! If you are bothered by cold drinks, you can keep a pitcher of water by your bed. Make sure to TRY to drink as much as you can to keep from becoming dehydrated!! (not to mention it will help you recover faster I was told.) My recovery took about a month or so, but everyone is different. -You might not eat solid foods for about 2 weeks or more. Chewing gum will help encourage swallowing saliva. Rest as much as you can until you feel better. I was also told to gargle with warm salt water everyso often, and also too listerine mouthwash if you can. They will also give you some pain medication to help afterwards, although I found it didn't do too much for me.

Good luck with your surgery! And even though the pain will be pretty bad, it won't last forever. Hope I've helped some. :)

Listen to your doctor...Recovery rate is slower as we age is what I think. We also can communicate pain way better than a toddler who gets the same surgery...It is done while you are awake?

Rough only in the sense that you will remember the surgery. It's usually done on small kids and they end up with no memory of the surgery or post operative pain. I had mine out at 4....I remember nothing. Don't eat ice cream. It causes thick mucus in your throat and you will just keep trying to clear it over and over and that WILL hurt. Eat Popsicles or Italian ice that doesn't contain dairy products. Lots of water, too. And take whatever medications the doctor gives you. In a couple of days you will feel much better.

my husband had hes febuary will be two years he had a very bad time he was 37 years old. couldnt eat nothing for 4 months. just popcikles only. good luck. my daughter had hers out this feb done good with it she was 8 years old.good luck..........very p[ainful

I had mine done when i was 26!! It was very rough! Soup, jello, ice cream, pancakes soaked in syrup, apple juice, gatorade...
Mine was very rough because I had bleeding complications 2 week after the surgery. Didnt eat a solid food meal for a month. Lost a lot of weight!
