A wee bit paranoid, perhaps? |
I have two daughters, (ages 5 & 8) and have just been told they both need a Tonsillectomy & Adenoidectomy due to reoccuring Strep infections, fluid behind the ears & enlarged tonsils. We met with the Doctor and he scheduled them both for surgery for 3 weeks from now. Neither of my children have had any type of surgery before, so naturally, I'm completely freaked out about all of but namely, the general anesthesia. The Doctor said I could simply continue to treat the strep infections with antibiotics but I opted for surgery for the both of them. I know that T&A's are an extremely common surgery in children but I can't help but wonder if I'm taking an unnecessary risk? You are extremely within your rights to be worried . They are your babies, it's your job to worry.Treating them with anti-biotics several times throughout the year isn't very good for them either. Sure, it gets rid of the strep, but it also robs them of all of thier good antibodies. Eventually thier bodies will become immune to certain antibiotics and they will have to take stronger ones. I'm sure your dr. explained that. (or he shouldv'e). Dr.s throw around anti biotics too much now. They could really need to use certain anti biotics in the future, but could have already become immune to it b/c of all treatments from strep. Bottom line, it is your choice, you have ultimate decision you are the only one that knows whats best for them. After all, they're your babies. Its natural to worry about any surgical procedure but I think you are doing the right thing, constantly being sick from strep and any of the ears, nose and throat problems is tiresome for anyone at any age. Go with the surgery. |
