Addison's disease is a rare disorder which is caused by a deficiency of the corticosteroid hormones hydro cortisone and aldosterone, normally produced by the adrenal cortex. (outer part of adrenal glands) Named after an English doctor Thomas Addison (1793-1860) Is was almost always fatal until hormone treatment became available in the 1950's
An autoimmune disorder is the most common cause. Tuberculosis was once the main cause but is now extremely rare.
in addition to the deficient production of aldosterone and hydro cortisone excessive amounts of ACTH and other hormones are secreted by the pituitary gland. One hormone is MSH or melanocyte-stimulating hormone which increases the synthesis of melanine pigment in the skin.
