My entire body has been retaining fluid?

I have had Addison's Disease for a year now. My body has begun to swell within the last 3 months. My face has become puffy and my legs become extremely tight. My blood work is showing up normal. No lupus. No thyroid issues. The swelling is everyday. My normal weight is between 110-115. I am now at 130. I went on a diuretic for 3 days and went down to 123. The diuretic cuases me to get severe cramping so I no longer take it. Any ideas as to what this could be? I am miserable.

I was prescribed the diuretics

This is a very serious question, as Addison's Disease is very serious. I'm assuming the disease is now under control and your adrenal glands are now functioning properly, since you say your blood work is showing up normal.

What concerns me is whether the doctor prescribed the diuretics or if you bought them over the counter on your own. If you did it on your own, you are doing something very dangerous, even if you didn't have the Addison's. The cramping you feel from the diuretics is because they are throwing your electrolyte balance out of whack. That usually starts with cramping and ends up with a heart attack, since the heart is a muscle too. No one should ever take a diuretic without a doctor's supervision because a doctor will usually prescribe potassium with it to protect the heart.

You need to see your doctor, tell him/her about the edema (swelling). You need to find out if it is water retention or lymph fluid retention (called lymphedema). It's probably water because diuretics won't remove lymph fluid, and you did lose weight. One thing I can tell you as you wait for your doctor's appointment - don't hold back on drinking water. Many people who retain water think it will help if they drink as little water as possible. The opposite is true. The more water you drink, the more you will have to pee, and therefore you will lose more water. If you try not to drink water, the body will automatically hold on to every drop it has, which can cause retention.

I assume you have an endocrinologist, who would specialize in the glands and your metabolism. It is most important that you go and tell the doctor everything, even about the water pills (if you took them on your own). I wish you the best of luck.

see your doc about water pills

Have you been eating more salt or greasy food lately? That can make me hold water. Sports drinks do it too.

I would have my dr send me to a nephrologist to have my kidney function evaluated. Good luck.
