Whats it like having a steroid injection up your spine? (i have cronic sciatica atm from a prolapsed disc)?

I am having one tomorrow for my sciatica/prolapsed disc problem, as the pain is unbearable at the moment, especially in the morning. I get up at 5 or 6 every morning in agony and take a handful of different pain killers and diazapam to loosen the muscles in my leg as they go into spasm. Then I have to walk around for an hour till they start to work. I have had physio and acupuncture and they have not worked.,...........

Hi, I just had an injection about 3 weeks ago. I was really scared to get the injection. I had taken 2 pain killers before we left the house. I too, was in agony. So anyway, they lay you on a table face down. Prep your back with betadine. Then a small pinch (nothing at all really) to numb the area. Then with a longer needle the follow with an xray machine to make sure they are in the correct spot. They slowly put the needle in the right area and inject the medication. That is the most painful part. Which, really wasn't bad at all. It just feels like a lot of pressure right in that area. It last for a couple of minutes and that was it. I really thought it would be immediate relief, but it wasn't. I took about 3 days before I felt almost pain free. I feel good most of the time. If I sit too long or walk to long, it starts acting up, but for the most part, I would definitely get another on if I need to. I hope this information was helpful. I wish you the best.

Ask for a local anesthetic before getting it done, 'cause they hurt like h311 otherwise! But they really usually help; takes about 2 days for it to kick in. You can usually have up to 3 injections for a specific site.

Good luck tomorrow!

PS: If you think of it, let me know how it went.

hi, i am a physiotherapist and i know very well what you are felling about this pain (sciatica). briefly i will tell you some recommendations about sciatica treatment caused by disc prolapse:
1- you have a choice of medical treatment (anti inflammatory, pain killer, muscle relaxant, relaxing drug) BUT all these drugs should filtered in kidney and liver and then will destroy them if you used to take it for long time.
2- second choice is surgical treatment, i called it surgical trauma because surgeons will absolutely destruct structures around the spine and around sciatic nerve.
3- third is physiotherapy that i preferred, i swear not because i am physiotherapist, however i used specific programs of physical therapy (sorry not that you have before). I gained results that pass the limit of 90% success.
if you are convinced, ask me to give you the effective treatment by E-mail ,,,my E- mail is:
waleeds306@yahoo.com.
for your information i have got master degree in back problems.

usually an anesthesiologist will administer an I. V. of medication so that you are not really to aware of what is going on. You're going to feel pressure from the injection. when you come out of the drugged state, ask for an ice pack to place on the area of injection. This will help you not hurt later. This injection usually takes care of the sciatic Pain. I know it's scary, but think about the positive results.
