Can ACUPUNCTURE help the following diseases/disorders?

Hi all! :) I have the following conditions:

- ADHD (mainly the attention deficit part)
- asthma
- acid reflux/GERD
- meralgia paresthetica

I'm a big believer in "alternative" treatments like chiropractic, acupuncture, acupressure, herbalism, reiki, etc. I'd love to try acupuncture because I've heard so many good things about it, but unfortunately I can't afford it right now. :( I can barely afford my chiropractor and my regular HMO medical plan, but I won't give those up!

At any rate, I suspect it could probably help ALL of my conditions at least somewhat, but I'm wondering if anyone here can tell me which of the conditions stand the best chance of being helped by acupuncture? Also -- and this is a long shot -- if anyone knows of an inexpensive but GOOD acupuncturist in the Silicon Valley/South Bay Area of California, please tell me who it is! :) Thanks!

P.S. For those who've no idea what meralgia paresthetica is, click here: http://www.emedicine.com/neuro/topic590....

To Dr. N. & other doctors -- no disrespect intended, but taking medication for some disorders is often only a "band-aid". It suppresses them, keeps them under control, but does NOT "cure" them.

All meds have side effects, & some meds also increase your risk of developing other disorders down the line. For example, I take generic Prilosec daily for my acid reflux (Zantac was too weak), but longterm use of proton-pump inhibitors like Prilosec correlate with increased risk of stomach cancer. Plus, it's simply NOT NATURAL to force one's stomach to not produce acid. It's supposed to make acid, for crying out loud! :( I'm scared of what I'm doing to my body this way.

And what if I want to have a baby down the line? You're not even supposed to take steriod-based asthma inhalers (like QVAR), of which I take 2-3 puffs daily. And I sure couldn't take Prilosec or ADHD meds!

I'd much rather RESOLVE my disorders, not just "cover them up". I need to at least TRY alternative options! :)

The beauty of acupuncture (particularly five element, or traditional acupuncture) is that they will treat YOU - the person, not your disease labels or symptoms, so that all of these conditions will get addressed.
There is also a great deal that you can do for yourself such as nutrition and herbs - get some good books - many can be found at libraries!

good luck!

Why should you turn to alternative medicine when there is a simple medication for your condition? This is especially true for asthma and acid reflux.

For the ADHD, meditate
For asthma, L-Arginine or coffee. Coffee promotes the growth hormone arginine Arginine is such a reliable GH releaser that it is used to test for GH deficiency in children. Arginine also promotes nitrous oxide which relaxes blood vessels and it's full of antioxidants. Relaxed blood vessels promotes better breathing.
For acid reflux/GERD: try papaya supplements
For meralgia paresthetica: If caused by mechanical factors, such as compressive clothing, belts, obesity, and pregnancy. Try wearing loose clothes, lose the belt and the weight or have that baby.

I try and avoid more medications, as I have many problems by being over medicated for so long. My condition is terminal, where as these may be treated. I have had acupuncture for eight herniated discs in my spine. Ouch! It did absolutely nothing, but run up a huge bill. I do herbal remedies when at all possible and I hope you at least try them.

Good health to you!

asthma - don't drink milk or sugar - take calcium citrate 600 mg & stevia drops if you can afford it

acid reflux - aloe juice, 1/4 tablet of hydrocholoric acid (your stomach isn't making enough), http://www.totalhealthnutrients.com/ph/c... (if you can find these elements at a cheaper price, go with that), slippery elm bark/cinnamon/ginger/licorice tea or any combo.

here's info on MP see if you can find more yourself: http://www.chiroweb.com/archives/10/17/0...

In your list of disorders, you forgot to mention: Terminal GULLIBILITY!

"The National Council Against Health Fraud has concluded:
Acupuncture is an unproven modality of treatment.
Its theory and practice are based on primitive and fanciful concepts of health and disease that bear no relationship to present scientific knowledge
Research during the past 20 years has not demonstrated that acupuncture is effective against any disease.
Perceived effects of acupuncture are probably due to a combination of expectation, suggestion, counter-irritation, conditioning, and other psychologic mechanisms.

Yes it can be cured by acupuncture, but well if you cant afford it, you can always get to know student acupuncturists who will gladly do it for free. dont worry, they will normally consult their professors before doing it on you and its even better than the ones outside. Acupuncture has 2000 yrs of recorded history and proof showed it existed since stone age. the basic human nature is to tap yourself on where your body aches and thats how acupuncture evolved.

Rather than looking for an acupuncturist, you should look for a Doctor of Chinese Medicine. Acupuncture is just one of many tools they use to help you regain your vitality and health.

you have many answers and facts and myths to sort thru and chose what is best for you. only you can make as informed a decision as possible.
just do try to weigh the evidences..is it all anecdotal or are there scientific studies to statistically prove it works in XX% of the time.
Dietary changes and seeing a good nutritionist
could help with all your problems too.
Allergies trigger all sorts of other imbalances in the body.
so be sure you include diet in your treatment

Acupuncture and Chinese medicine can effectively treat the cause of those conditions by treating you as an individual, as mentioned above. I recommend the Acupuncture & Integrative Medicine College, Berkeley (www.aimc.edu). They have a low-cost student clinic where you can be treated under the supervision of a highly experienced licensed acupuncturist.

Please read my testimonials on glyconutrients on my blog roll.

Let me know what you think/

Acupuncture is merely cutting the nerve neurotransmitter. We have literally thousands of nerves running in our body centrally located in our Spinal cord. You can cut a nerve that makes your eye brow twitch from your back area. So acupuncture is nothing more than cutting the nerve or blocking the nerve giving you better comfort.
