Does the Mirena IUD cause acne?

I got the mirena iud back in october, and the last month or so my forhead has been breaking out. Also around my hairline all the way around my head has been breaking out too. Does this usually go away? How long does it take? What can I do to make it stop quicker?

My face broke out like a teenager's after i got Mirena. I've had mine for 18 months now and my skin still breaks out around the time for my period, otherwise, it's normal. I would suggest just sticking to a good facial cleansing routine and maybe use a lighter moisturizer for a bit .
Good luck

IUD and other birth controls do not cause acne. Acne is caused by the staph bacteria that is coming to fight the dirt and oil in your pores.

Acne and oilier skin is a common side effect of the Mirena (and other progesterone-only based contraceptives). That is why I got the copper-only IUD.
Try keeping your skin super clean, do not touch your face, and use a mild water-based facial moisturizer- sometimes skin gets oilier because it doesn't have enough water.

I got the Mirena IUD in May 2006, and did not have problems with break outs until this past January. I don't think it was because of the IUD, but stress, and that's what might be causing yours. Daily facial cleansing will work if you use products that are compatible with your skin type. For example, I don't use Neutrogena because it burns my face, but it might be the miracle cure for you. Proactiv is fast and effective, although costly. I used it in 2002 before my wedding, and within a week my face was cleared up. You might need to hydrate, but I don't know how effective that is in preventing breakouts because I don't drink anything but water and my breakouts keep coming back. If all else fails, ask your gynecologist about it and ask to be referred to a dermatologist.

Good luck!

I have had mine since August and I have had no change in break outs.
