How to treat adult back acne?

My boyfriend has recently been getting a lot of pimples and ingrown hair on his back..it started about a month ago and it just keeps getting worse it is from the middle of his back all the way up and drops down onto his shoulders.. is there any kond of soap or anything that isnt really expensive tha we can try to clear it up? He is really upset about it because he has a nice body and enjoys swimming and stuff with his shirt off but refuses to take his shirt off around people now!!!
