Vocal cords covered in mucus- what will help?

I've seen an Ear Nose Throat Specialist and i have allergies and acid reflux that causes it, but the medicine only helps so much. I've tried diet changes, taking digestive enzymes, gargling salt water, doing a nasal douche, using saline nasal spray... I haven't found anything that will completely get rid of it and i'm running out of money. It all started after i was sick a series of times last winter and it just seems to get worse.

I really appreciate everyone who's respoonded. Other factors:
I don't smoke, never have.
I drink at least 2 liters of water a day.
I have very little dairy in my diet, only a little bit from certain packaged foods.
I rarely eat or drink citrus.

Boogywoogey's answer seems to pertain the most to the situation. I'm taking Prilosec OTC twice a day and Claritin D 24 hr. once a day. I do sleep with 2 pillows- one very thick. I hadn't heard anything about hot tea- which i drink a lot of. I have always heard that humming is good for the vocal cords. I'm in school for music therapy and my major instrument is voice. It's hard to avoid singing for this reason, but i don't sing as much as i used to- mainly because it's difficult much of the time and uncomfortable. I haven't been avoiding those foods as much as i could because i thought i didn't need to while on acid reflux meds. I'll try that.

Frequently, a patient with vocal cord swelling from a cold, allergies, and/or GERD (reflux), will get embroiled in a vicious cycle which prevents the swelling from going down. It will feel like there is mucus or the sensation of having something in your throat, when in reality, the vocal cords are only swollen. That's why your problem keeps getting worse; you haven't broken the cycle. The cycle needs to be broken so healing can occur.
First is the issue of the reflux. Diet changes include limiting or eliminating the following things from one's diet:
Caffeine, acidic foods (like tomatoes and citrus), spicy foods, alcoholic beverages, nicotine, and carbonated beverages. Hot liquids will not allow the cords to have a reduction in swelling; cold ones are likely to cause a strong coughing jag. Cool or room temperature beverages are best.
Eat several smaller meals, rather than 3 big ones.
Positioning helps, too. Do not lie down for at least an hour after eating. Sleep on two pillows so your head will be at approximately 30 degrees above the mattress. You can get a foam wedge at a medical supply store, if you wish; it may help better than the pillows will.
Take your medicine at least an hour before bed. You may want to consider an antihistamine, too.
Protect your vocal cords by practicing good vocal hygiene. Avoid or eliminate shouting, smoking or second-hand smoke, coughing and throat-clearing (drink a bit of water, instead), humming, loud whispering, laughing, and singing. Speak as little as possible. Avoiding these behaviors will allow time for your cords to heal and reduce swelling and inflammation.
Follow all of the above and you will likely hear an improvement in your voice in a couple of weeks, with most of the improvement happening after a month of following this regimen.

Water really helps with thinning the mucus which enables it to move up and out of your throat easier, so drinking 6-8 8-ounce glasses of water per day is a great way to start. Have you tried any over the counter medications like Mucinex? Mucinex also helps thin the mucus & phlegm which makes it easier to cough up. Also, if you smoke you're only making it worse. The inhaled smoke will singe the cilia that lines the throat (cilia has a wave-like movement that helps push things up the throat). I have a similar problem, so I hope this helps. =)

I have that.

Took allergy shots every week for 3 years, helped about 30%.
Allergies are dustmites and mold.

Takes me until noon to clear my throat. Can't even speak sometimes.

I have no good answer. I hope someone else has.

u said that u have tried diet changes but do u know that some food like orange, cheese and milk will make mucus grow?hmmm.....try eating noodles in soup and plenty of vegetables or porridge till u recover and avoid salty or sweet food like meat with tomato sauce...i hope this helps....
