Ankle injury - help? |
So yesterday I was on an artificial turf field wearing tennis shoes (lots of friction) and I did something really dumb. I extended my right leg forward like I was going to slide into the splits, but because of the friction, my leg didn't slide. What happened was that my heel touched the ground and didn't slide, while the rest of my foot just kept going forward, so I quite forcefully extended my ankle. My achilles tendon immediately felt a bit sore, and I couldn't walk normally. I went home and got ice on my achilles within fifteen minutes, and today my ankle is a little bit better but it still hurts. When I point my foot and try to flex it outward, my achilles tendon hurts so that I can't flex it outward. There are several things that can be going on. It really depends on where you are feeling pain. there may be some irritation of the achilles tendon. Sometimes if you forcefully point the foot, you can bruise the bone on the top of the ankle (the talus). If the force is great enough, you can acutally cause a fracture. A third possiblity is a sprain of one of the ligaments in the back of the ankle. Ice is your best home option. If the pain persists for more than 3-4 days or gets significantly worse, you should see a physician to rule out any serious injuies. Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation (RICE) is the treatment of choice. In the end, a diagnosis is possible only if we can actually SEE and evaluate your injury, anything on the internet is an educated guess. I am a certified athletic trainer. Good luck and God bless. If you can wiggle your foot, it's not broken and a doc will probably tell you to keep it iced, raised, and keep weight off of it. Read "how to repair old injuries" at Helium.com-health&fitness/exercise. Its not fun or pleasant but it works. If you can still move the foot/ ankle then it will most likely be okay. You Achilles tendon being sore is not all that uncommon. If the pain persists even with icing, rest and elevation, go see your doctor. |
