How long til Antibiotics start to work? |
I was put on an Antibiotics called Phenoxymethylpenicillin on tuesday for a Tooth abscess. I will be having the tooth removed when the course is over, but I am still in pain after being on the Antibiotics for three days. I have been taking Nurofen and paracetamol, but these only work leaving me to have pain before I take the next round of them. {First I take the Nurofen, two hours later the paracetamol, and so on, but not exceding the doses on the pack} What I would like to know, if anyone else knows, is when are the Antibiotics supposed to start working? Update. 2 to 3 days abcesses in the mouth are hard to treat because the jaw is less vascular, therefore not as much antibiotic gets to the abcess. It can take up to four days before you have no pain. in a couple of hours It takes time to get into the bloodstream. I normally take Ibuprofen because its very effective but it can make you a little drowsy If the infection is severe it could take a week for them to work xx Your doctor or pharmacist could answer that question best. Antibiotics usually start working within 24 hours, but that deosn't mean the pain will go away. It can also depend on how bad the infection is. General rule of thumb is 48 hours. So it's starting to work for you but it must be a bad infection. Sorry to hear you're going thru so much pain, good luck on the removal! it starts working immediatly, killing of the germs and such, it is prob the abscess that is sore, it will hopefully feel better after it is removed good luck! Dude it doesnt say anywhere that they are pain relievers they are suppose to keep you from having problems with infections and dieases before and after surgery. Your doctor should have spoken with you about it It takes a few days for the medication to get into your system to work.Be careful about the amount of paracetamol you are taking. If you are still in pain go back to see the dentist as you may need a higher dose of antibiotic I think they put you on Anitbiotics just to kill any infections that may have set in your decaying tooth. The purpose of antibiotics is not to dull the pain. Till it's amount in blood reaches to an optimum level, which it self demands upon whether you take the medicine empty stomach or the type of food you take. one thing is definite that fatty meals delays the absorption of the drugs mostly. When all the pills have been taken. it takes approx 24hours for AB's to get into your system, as previously said these are not painkillers but however they should start to help reduce infection therefor reduce the pain, you should go back and see your dentist may be that you need a stronger dose of penicillin or another kind of anti-biotic like metronidazole (used for severe infections) or eve a combination of both, depending on how bad the infection is now theymay even be able to take the tooth out for you, generally dont take teeth out when there is infection as anaesthetic wont work as well ones quite acidic and other alkaline meaning infection cancels out the anaesthetic solution! i have same problem i have found takin anadin extra is best for pain relief and ibuprofen i have mine in the roof of my mouth which is really anoying it started in my 2 front teeth and has moved im on amoxcillyn good luck it takes about 4 days to get in the blood system get codeine and paracetamol from the chemist there really good you might need to find another dentist I have the best he has never ever left me in pain.. There are things your dentist could have done to make that better he just decided not to... find another dentist.. |
