Chicken or the Egg Question... Would a severe sinus infection lead to an abscessed root canal or vice versa?

Here's the deal...

I had a simply awful sinus infection... giant funky green globs coming out, pressure sensitive tooth (with a root canal), sinus pain, swollen face, the works. After seeing my MD, the day AFTER I started on antibiotics, a grape sized blister suddenly appeared above the sensitive (although it was no longer sensitive at this point) tooth. The sinus infection resolved and the blister GRADUALLY improved but was still draining from a fistula over a month later.

Long story short... I now know I have an abscess in the root canal... that one of the roots have broken... and I am going in for a root amputation this week. My question is, "Did the sinus infection lead to the abscess developing?" OR "Did the abscess lead to the sinus infection?"

It hardly seems like it was a coincidence. I've tried asking my MD and the dentist, but have yet to get a clear answer. I have heard that abscesses that break into a sinus can be dangerous. Your thoughts?

It's hard to know which started what. Both things could be related. Focus for now on working with your MD and dentist to get better and be sure to pay careful attention to all written and oral directions you are given regarding care of your mouth and face. Ask questions if you are unsure or wondering about anything. Best of luck. Oh and after you are healed, you and they may have a better idea of what caused the problems.
