Does an abscessed tooth always wind up needing root canal or extraction? |
If a tooth that already has a root canal develops an abscess but it clears up is there still a necessity to extract the tooth. Is there a possibility that the tooth will no longer develop any additional abscesses. The tooth can be retreated, but a specialist is needed for this. The specialist is an Endodontist. Your dentist can refer you to one locally. I have seen some people go for many years with what appears to be an abscess on an xray and there are no symptoms. Periodically taking an xray will show any changes and that will let you know if any more treatment is needed. Sometimes the bone just doesn't fill back in, but it doesn't necessarily mean there is still infection. If you are having a fistula or small bump that appears on the gum by that tooth, then yes, there is infection and you need to either retreat it or extract it. Pain does not always have to be present. If the infection is able to leak out, then the tooth won't hurt. The bump on the gum is your signal that there still is a problem. Usually. The bacteria from that tooth can get into your bloodstream and cause severe and sometimes fatal damage to your body. Get this taken care of soon. |
