Anyone have info on IUDs? risks? costs? effectiveness?

I'm 30...I've had other methods of birth control fail me, resulting in 2 abortions, wich was devestating for me...anyone have advice and/or knowledge on wether an IUD would be a good, more reliable form of protection, and what bad side effects can I expect?

okay, i have the mirena iud, and it cost me 700$ (some insurance companies will pay for it, others dont, but the way i look at it is, it last 5 years, overall 700 is cheaper then what i would pay for the pill for 5 years and it is more effective).. as far as risk, i know there is a greater chance of infection if you are sleeping with multiple partners, but if you are monogamous, its really a great option. i had bleeding when mine was first inserted for 5 months straight, but since that stopped my periods have been much lighter(however they do last longer) but the mirena iud is as effective as getting your tubes tied, without actually having to go thru tubal ligation. also, if you decide before 5 years, that you do want to have a baby, the iud is removed in one quick trip to the gyno, and its like youve never been on birth control again, you are ready to try and concieve immediately! i choose the iud, because my last baby was concieved on the birth control pill. talk to your doc, but the iud is a good choice for many women!! and is very reliable!

good luck

My daughter has a Merina IUD. It cost her $500.00. It is good for 5 years. It not only keeps a fertilized egg from nesting in the womb it also excretes a hormone to. Your periods will be off for a while due to this hormone. But so far my daughter is happy with it. As with other birth controls it does not stop STD's. But she likes the idea that she can be spontaneous with her boyfriend and not have to worry as much about another pregnancy. But call your Dr. and get a recommendation to an OB/GYN who can answer all your other questions.
