Menses after IUD....?

********************REAL ANSWERS ONLY***********************
I got an IUD 2 months ago, and both menses I have had since I got the IUD place has been extremely painful. Is this normal. It is a normal copper IUD, I am not allergic to copper, I have 0 children, 0 live births, 0 abortions.

I got on the IUD because was about to have surgery and didn't want an "accident" to happen when I know I can't carry right now and can't carry for along while. Please help.

*******ONLY ANSWER IF YOU WANT TO HELP***********

I have the copper IUD for a year already. I was 18 y/o when I had inserted. Like you, Ihad 0 children, 0 births and 0 abortions. It is normal to have painful and heavy periods for the first few months of having your IUD. It usually takes about 3-6 cycles to adjust. However, I would say that the advantages still outweighs the side effects since the adjustment period only last for a couple of months but the protection that the copper offers is up to 10-12 years.

Personally, after having copper IUD for 1 year, I have 0 problems, 0 side effects and 0 complaints. I would advice you though to talk to your doctor for pain reliever advice that you could take during your period to lessen the pain.

Paragard IUD is the best birth control for me. I really love it. If you have more questions, you can go to a livejournal community of girls who have or had IUD's. I am an active member and the girls there are really very helpful and supportive. Here is the link:

See your dr ASAP. You could still have some bleeding after having an IUD placement. However, being that they've painful could indicate an IUD malfunction, displacement, etc. Have your dr check it out before problems persist.

I also have a copper IUD. However, I got mine after having three children! IUDs are intended for women who have already given birth, since the uterus has been accustomed to having a "foreign object" in it. Period pain/cramping does increase when you have a copper IUD. This is common, but should only last DURING your period, not in between. If the pain is unbearable, then you need to have a sonogram to check the placement/position of your IUD to make sure it is not lodged in the lining of your uterus or becoming displaced. Ibuprofin is what my midwife recommended to me during the first few days of each period to manage pain.

yes, this is normal. the copper iud is well known for causing heavier and more painful periods. you really should have been warned about it before placing the iud. the alternative iud, mirena, will result in much much lighter periods or none at all, and much much less pain

What you are experienceing is pretty common. You should allow yourself about 6 months for your body to fully adjust.

"Common side effects associated with the copper IUD are increased vaginal bleeding and menstrual pain. Taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (Advil, Motrin, others) helps with these symptoms."
