Abortion?!?!?!?

My friend had an abortion yesterday. It's not something I agree with, so please dont tell me how wrong it is. But earlier today, I got a message from her boyfriend that she went to the hospital today, and when I asked what happened, I got a simple "abortion complications."

I'm not being nosy, just curious.. what could go so wrong after an abortion that she winds up in the hospital?

I think it will depend on what type of operation she had. If she was under a general anesthetic and had a vacuum suction or D&C then there could be infection complications (though i wouldn't have thought it would become so serious so quickly).

Another common complication is that not all of the tissue is removed - this can cause a problem because her body sees it as a foreign body. For this the doctors will often repeat the procedure or give her medication to make her cramp so that the retained tissue is expelled.

I think the last possibility that I know happens a lot is that there is actually nothing wrong, it's just that she didn't realise how much bleeding there may be, and so has gone back to the hospital to check that it is ok.

Hope your friend is ok - she is lucky to have such a concerned friend.

Lots of possibilities. Many involve continued bleeding. Sometimes the ability to bear children in the future is lost.

omigosh lots of things. i dont have a problem w/ abortion, but i did a project on it in 8 grade. sometimes people are allergic to the pills or shots they give you, ive read that a piece of the fetus can still get left inside you, etc. i dont know how exactly they do abortions since ive never had one or known anyone who has, but thats just what ive read. hope your friend is ok.

Some general things about what happens after abortions

There are a couple of things. She is probably bleeding more than she should. I have heard that this happens sometimes. Another thing is, there is a chance of some damage done in there. That isn't as common. My guess would be that she is bleeding heavily and that they are concerned about that. Sad thing....

plenty can go a little off. It is a major thing. Just like things can go a little off after ANY medical procedure. Your best bet is just to be a great Friend and be there for her. What a tough thing to go through. Although I also do not believe in it.

Most likely it's infection or heavy bleeding. Patients are usually told to see a doctor right away if they develop a fever or start passing very large blood clots. There is a possiblity that her uterus was punctured, but the doctor performing the abortion should have noticed that right away.

Most likely, it's due to injury to blood vessels which, probably, caused her to hemmorhage but could, also, be injury to the genital tract or other internal organs (bladder, for example). An infection can result from any of the above and the possibility of septicemia (blood poisoning) can result from any surgery - septicemia, untreated for 24+ hours can result in death so, it's good to know your friend is back in the hospital to be cared for.
I think there would be fewer abortions if young women knew what could possibly happen as a result - the likelihood of ectopic pregnancy is, slightly, increased (who wants to have added risk?). The emotional damage, sometimes, isn't realized until many years later. Life before The Pill and Women's Lib was less complicated as the, great, majority of us waited until marriage to have sex ... in my h.s. class of 57 girls, two became pregnant - one married and the other decided to not marry and had an abortion.
To the best of my knowledge, only another 5 had sex before marriage - our parents would have hung us by our thumbs, or chained us to the bedpost and then banned us to an out-of-town relative for a year (or sent us to a convent .....).
When will young women realize sex is not "free"?
