If you had a medical test and the tech said " there are some abnormalities, but have to talk to the Dr 1st"

But the next appointment isn't for 2wks. How would you feel?? Personally I'm going thru every emothion. Mad, scared, etc and it's not me it's my 23 yr old daughter! Why if the tech's can't answer the paitent's ?'s do they say anything at all???? Shouldn't they just keep quite and let the DR read the test and tell the paitent? Now she is going to be stressed out till she knows what's going on!! Why put people thru that stress at all??? Where is the line here ..

Thanks for your answers .. I guess it's an ethics question I'm asking. When should tech, if at all, say anything good or bad. Doesn't matter what kind of test. I know if something is life threatening then yes. call the DR ASAP.. that happened to my BF. But it was the DR who called him. She knows something is "abnormal" already or they wouldn't have ordered the testing.. why make it worse by saying that? She isn't the kind to not see her DR for the results. My dad was a GP so I have a pretty good idea of what is what but I just don't understand.. I've had tests and have asked and been told I would have to speak to my DR..

The techs are not allowed to tell you anything but the tech should have just said the doctor will see you in a couple of weeks. There is nothing worse than waiting and fearing that something is wrong. The tech should have kept quiet.

well what kind of test was it?

the tech was waaaaaaaaaaay out of line, I'd call his boss and complain. He hasn't the experience, training or the licensure to say a damned thing about the test results. He should not have said anything.
What you can rest assured in, is when the doctor saw the results and didn't call you in sooner, it is likely no big deal.

Ehhhhh, this is sticky. The tech should have said nothing. We deal with this issue a lot. However, it is up to your daughter to call and get her results. Tell her to call the RN assigned to the physician to get her results. Your daughter should tell the office staff she expects a call today from the RN. That is allowable by phone.
Best of luck to you.

You do not state what test so I will guess x-ray, ultrasound, MRI. Having had so many, due to Rheumatoid Arthritis, I do know one thing, no one says anything except the Doctor. If I ask and am told to contact my Doc in 3 days I know something is wrong. If I ask and am told to contact my GP in two weeks, all is normal.
The term abnormalities could mean anything, including the test was done wrong! I have seen results where the films were damaged before exposure so the x-ray literally came back abnormal! That just means you have to return for another one. Best of Luck, but I am POSITIVE is it was anything SERIOUS the Doc would be telephoning your daughter the following morning! If it is serious, the Tech shows the result to a Consultant, who telephones the Physician and you are hauled in straight away! I have had a few of these calls as well!

I am so sorry you are going through this. It is normal for them to do this. They do not want to discuss anything with you over the telephone and ask you to come speak to the doctor.

First, anyone other than a doctor is not allowed to tell you anything other than there are abnormalities and get you in to see the doctor. They can't tell you everything is normal either and let you go on your way, so they have to be sure to get you in for an appointment. I know you understand that concept but this is your daughter you are talking about and nobody wants to wait.

If I were you, I would just walk in without an appointment. Most places do not refuse to see you. This is your daughters life and you do not want to wait for two weeks.

Have you tried calling and speaking to the doctor?

I don't know what your daughter went to the doctor for, but abnormalites could be a whole range of thing to almost nothing at all, to something serious. But nothing anyone is going to say will make it better until you talk to the doctor yourself. Go in there!
