I'm worried to tears! Has anyone had this problem?

I'm 23wks pregnant with my 2nd child. I had an ultrasound this morning as a re-check since the last ultrasound I had, we were unable to see all four chambers of the heart and the spacing between my cervix and placenta wasnt spaced enough. Good news is that all those problems were resolved this time around but another one has popped up. My doctor told me that while looking at the heart on the ultrasound this morning it seemed that there is a dense area in one part of the heart and said "studies"show that this is a sign to an abnormality in a chromasone that has to do with Down Syndrome. He tells me that he can send me to a specialist for a more informative ultrasound but he thinks that I have nothing to worry about since I have had the bloodowrk done which tests for those kinds of diseases and they came back negative. But how can I not worry? I plan on having the special untrasound done but am I over-reacting? Has anyone else had this problem? And if so what was the outcome?

Has your doctor mentioned doing an amniocentesis and testing that amniotic fluid? If your baby has Down syndrome it would be possible to find out by doing that. I'm sorry you're going through this, being pregnant is scary enough without complications. Talk to your doctor and try to relax as much as you can.

I don't want to add worry. But I have heard from many reliable sources that those blood tests are very unreliable. My sis-in -law was told that her child would be downs, the baby is as healthy as can be. The nurse that told my SIL this, told her that she doesn't even like to rely on the tests. Sounds like you're going to need further testing. So sorry.

God bless you, that is worry-some! Yes please get the other ultra sound, those tests are not always accurate. My friends mom had a negative test andher baby had downs...they never knew it. You are NOT over-reacting, that is your baby!!

God bless and good luck!!

i am also pregnant i am 21 weeks and as for the dense part indicating downs i cant say but as for the blood work they are not very reliable we dont even get them where i am from we get a scan at 12 weeks round about its called a neauchal or something like that and what it does is measrue the fluid at the back of the babies neck if its a big amount or too little this could mean a problem and then u would need further testing I.E the amniocentisis that i saw was mentioned earlier but they have a slight risk of miscarriage this is probably why your doc has referred u for a "detailed scan" but if i were u i would try my hardest to not worry and just take it easy i kno its easier said than done but worrying is bad for baby xx and most cases the heart will fix its self and nothing will be wrong so dont worry bout what maybe xx sorry i couldn't be of much more help but the scan is the best thing they can do xx

When it comes to your baby, over reacting is not a word. Just make sure you stay "calm" about it so it doesnt hurt your baby. I would get the special ultra sound, and you never know, it could be nothing at all. Ask about getting the bloodwork done a second time, maybe through a different doc. Good luck, and I'm sure everything will be fine.
