Epilepsy is a neurological disorder -- a physical condition -- which causes a malfunction of the electrical signals which control the operation of the brain. It is characterized by sudden, brief seizures whose nature and intensity varies from person to person. Epilepsy is not contagious. The following can be causes of epilepsy:

* Head injury that causes scaring of the brain tissue.
* Trauma at birth, or high fever.
* Excessively rough handling or shaking of infants.
* Certain drugs or toxic substances when administered in large doses.
* Interruption of blood flow to the brain caused by stroke, tumour, or certain cardiovascular problems.
* Diseases which alter the balance of blood or its chemical structure, or diseases that damage the nerve cells in the brain.

I have never herd of chromosomal abnormality. I have Epelipsy, and started having grand mal sezuries at age 21,right after my first child was born. I am now 57 years old,and the nerologist have run every test imaginable on me,and still CAN NOT tell me what caused me to have it. Usualy it is either from a head injury,or something like a tumor or anurisiam.

In some people, an inherited abnormality affects nerve cells in the brain, which leads to seizures.
Generalized seizures result most often from metabolic disorders and sometimes from genetic disorders.
Several types of epilepsy have been linked to defective genes that regulate how brain cells communicate with each other, but only a few rare types of the disorder are known to arise from specific gene defects. Otherwise, it appears that abnormalities in any of several hundred genes may play a role in the development of epilepsy. Although some forms of epilepsy tend to run in families, genetic inheritance plays only a partial role in causing epilepsy 鈥?perhaps by making a person more susceptible to environmental factors that cause seizures.
Congenital or developmental abnormalities:-
Genetic disorders (eg, fifth day fits*, lipid storage diseases such as Tay-Sachs disease), neuronal migration disorders (eg, heterotopias)
*Fifth day fits (benign neonatal seizures) are tonic-clonic seizures occurring between 4 and 6 days of age in otherwise healthy infants; one form is inherited.
Tay-Sachs disease is a deadly disease passed down through families that causes damage to the nervous system.
Please note that I am not a medical professional.
Please see the web pages for more details on Epilepsy and Tay-Sachs disease.
