Who has had trouble with cysts and abdominal pain?

I have had some uncomfortable aches in my abdominal region the past 5 days or so, I went to the gyno today and during a pelvic exam she was sure she felt at least one cyst, and I could definately feel it as well..my left and right sides are achey off and on near my ovaries/lower abdomen.... I'm going back for a sonogram, but my question is...who else has had pain with cysts? I hope this is nothing more serious...my doc didnt seem to think so so I hope not

Cysts are fluid filled masses that can develop just about anywhere , but the most common place in women is involving the ovaries and adnexal regions of the pelvis . they can be simple ( clear fluid) , or complex ( filled with blood , or thick puss like material). 99% are benign , but there are a few very rare ovarian carcinomas that present with a complex cyst configuration .

Treatment varies upon your personal health history and you Doctor. They may treat with hormones to try and resolve the cyst , or they may opt for a surgical intervention . It all depends ....

what most women dont realize is that every woman gets a cyst , sometimes up to 3 cm big with each cycle. This is called a follicle , and inside is the ovum . When you ovulate , this cyst ruptures ,releasing it like a jet pod into your fallopian tube . This rupture is why some women get awful
pre-menstrual cramps . In some cases , rather than resolve , the follicle will re-close itself , and continue to grow. Sometimes the aforementioned ovulation can cause bleeding inside of the cyst , and a bit of blood fills the pocket. Not dangerous ...but it can be sore ( it's almost like having a bruised ovary for lack of a better example) , and typically blood filled ( aka hemmoraghic) cysts can take up to 3 cycles to resolve .

Since 99% of cysts are benign , it's normal for a Doc to not be concerned . Course of action is almost always to do ultrasound monitoring for resolution , and in some cases hormone therapy to shrink the cysts. In rare ases , a cyst s so large or so bothersome a surgery is done to remove it .

I wish you luck :-)

Well, has been happening now for six years. Unexpected, sometimes, doubling over- sound like you? And then,. in a flash, gone.
Or, sometimes a deep ache that as long as you don't move too much, you're OK?
Yeah, well, that's my time of it at least... and it's no biggie.
Just as long as the pro's keep a watch on it, you're fine.

I used to have terrible pain from cysts... They will be able to tell from the ultrasound if it's something other than a cyst. Some cysts will disappear on their own... your doctor will probably keep an eye on them for a couple of months. Unfortunately, mine didn't go away so I had surgery to remove two cysts. I am much better now (the surgeries were two years ago). Hope that helps! Hang in there... there's lots they can do... you won't be in this much pain for long...

I have one on my right ovary...the doc tells me it is not big enough to take out so I take birth control pills to keep it from growing(it works!) other wise it keeps growing. Your doc will have to determine if you need to get yours removed, eventually they need to be removed if they grow too large. I haven't felt any pain as of yet, I hope it never comes to that! Hope you feel better soon!

I've had a cyst twice that was discovered after abdominal pain and then a pelvic exam at my gyn. Both times, post sonogram, the cyst was determined to be something called a functional or normal cyst. Both times the cyst and the pain went away in just a couple of weeks. I was permitted to see the sonogram images and the cyst was filled with clear fluid.

There are, according to the link below, all sorts of cysts, but most ovarian ones are the harmless functional sort.

Get it checked out to be safe and try not to worry too much (though I know how hard that is having been there myself... :) )

I had 3 cysts the size of chicken eggs on one ovary. I had an operation to remove them ~ they had to take the whole ovary.
Yes, it was very painful months before I had them remove the ovary. I doubled over in pain many times. I had an ultrasound to have them measured befor the operation.
I was paranoid when this happened to me, because my Mom died of ovarian cancer the same year. My doctor said it was not cancer, and when I had them removed they were benign but within 2 years I had a total hysterectomy because my other ovary exploded (every time an egg was released and that also was too painful. I had been diagnosed with PID, but it wasn't that either. The pain was so excruciating I collapsed in my shower and my boyfriend had to take me to the ER. Within 1 week I was scheduled for the hysterectomy/oopherectomy. Done. I was never to have any children but that is OK with me. I have never felt better in my entire life. Best thing I could have done. No more pain.
