Cost of an MRI?

My doctor has ordered an MRI for my pelvic/abdominal region. Has anyone here had that type of MRI done, and how much did it cost? I don't have insurance and can't really afford it, but I am having some unidentified pain and they want to check it out. I live in NC, as prices must vary from state to state. Thanks for any answers you can give.

You really need to call around to different facilities in your area. Prices will vary greatly. If you call a hospital, ask for both the price of the MRI and the price of the radiologist's reading, as there are two separate costs for these services. I work in a free standing imaging facility and we are about 25% less expensive than the hospital in our town. Also, find out if they give a cash discount for private paying/non insured patients. We will give a 10% discount in those cases.
