What is the real reason a person gets (ARDS) and dies?

My son died of ARDS Nov 2005 at the age of 25 healthy and in good shape. It happened so fast

Adult Respiratory Distress syndrome, can be an end effect of several other diseases, such as COPD, pneumonia, cancer, etc. basically the lungs which should be very pliable(flexible) become stiff and they don't expand the way they should, even with a ventilator, it gets harder and harder to ventilate the person, until if not reversed they can not be ventilated anymore. sometimes can be reversed with med like xigris, and with procedures called proning which involves laying the person face down for extended periods of time. however very few people survive ARDS, I'm sorry for your loss, hope this is informative.
