Where to find a breeder of special needs disability aid therapy dogs? |
I'm looking in particular for the dogs that are trained specifically matched to a particular person, not the dogs that are just like, Seeing eye dogs. They are usually called therapy dogs and disability dogs. They are usually gifted in some way that allows them to assist particular people with certian conditions [ie: Dog senses low blood sugar in diabetic and can alert them, carries insulin shots on harness] and are certied as a general 'Disability Aid'. I heard that these dogs can also be trained for certain mental disorders in the clinically depressed and other illness and I can't seem to find a breeder, just info on certification when I try to research. Actually, people don't 'breed' dogs specifically for therapy dogs. Therapy dogs sometimes are selected from shelters and rescues because they have good social qualities, and an ability to learn quickly. They are then intensely trained for several months or maybe a year by organizations specifically designed for this purpose. Why not go to Therapy Dogs International on your web and request info. ask your vet he would know,,, therapy dogs are not bred, they are usually taken from shelters and trained. As for the insulin thing...thats is innate in certain breeds of dogs i think...the only thing you have to train them to do is to alert you when tehy realize blood sugar is low...but msot dogs know in general anyway... |
