What first aid measures can be performed by a school nurse?

As a school nurse (assuming this is R.N. level)you should be certified as a NREMT-B at minimum.This would allow you to triage and treat the normal emergencies that would occur in the school/playground setting.Typically,R.N.'s become complacent with their day to day duties and do not perform pre-hospital duties on a regular basis,but given the fact that pediatric patients are somewhat different in how you treat them versus adult patients,it would be worth the 130 hour course.Children will compensate for a long time when something is wrong with them,but....once they start to decompensate,it's very fast....going down quickly.Talk to your supervisor,the school board may pay for this education as it is in direct relation to your position.

If you are a school nurse then it is your responabilty to listen to the kids. If they have a fever take their temperture, if they have a sore throat then look to see how red their throat is and feel their glands on their neck to see how swollen they are. When A kid comes in with a sprained shoulder put ice on it and monitor the child and call the parents and comfort them because it's scary. When someone hurts their knee see how much range of motion the knee can move. When A student comes in with a headache take their temp. and give them two asprin of course with paarental consent. Help the girls that are having their period by having them lay down with a heating pad. You are also incharge of emergance situations if someone faints from heat exhaustion, Someone having an asthma attack or coughing up blood or calling 911. Doing CPR is a nurses ob and using the defibulator to help the person come back to life.It's about being with the student and comforting them. I spent alot of time inthe nurses office and observed what her the nurses of duties were.I spent a whole gym year in the nurses office because of a leg injury. Thant's why now I am becoming a nurse because I feel that I need to give back to the community.

I am an EMT and a high school student unfortunatley in resent events I learned that a school nurse really isn't prepaired to handle any real emergency in a proper fashion. Just because you have the title of a nurse doesn't really mean you know what you doing. If a kid feels sick do what you normally do, but if a kid is seriously hurt or sick you and you dont know what your doing call 911 and the childs parents. NEVER try to do more then your alloud to do or feel comfortable. Call the first aid squad and the people there will know exactly what to do and are very competent and experienced. They will know what to do in allmost every emergency and handly it in the proper fashion.
As a school nurse you can really on take temperatures, send kids home and put band-aids on paper cuts. you really don't have the training or equipment to do much more then that.
