Asperger's syndrome and problems in school????????????????????????...

I am curious to know if people with AS are routinely having problems in school. This friend of mine has it and is in college. Right now he is taking 5 classes and is overwhelmed. He freaks out in class when he gets overwhelmed by swearing, moaning and biting his hand. He also has the most creatively foul mouth I have ever heard and has some weird thing with the F-word. I am also curious if AS/PDD-NOS is related to ADD/ADHD or Tourette's Syndrome. I am also curious if people with AS are more likely to be single the rest of there life cause he is 19 and has never even dated and gets bothered by it. I also know a SSG in the army who has it and is 23 and has never dated either. I am also curious if people with AS are less likely to go to college cause most Aspies I know hate school with passion. My friend was forced into college by his parents and is doing poorly because of it.

Wow, lots of interesting questions!

It sounds as if your friend has taken on too much to start. Perhaps he can seek help at the school, perhaps even some modifications?

Yes, AS can pose difficulties in school settings. It is a big problem for a lot of Aspies.

AS, PDD-NOS, AD/HD, TS, etc. are all on "the spectrum". Some might disagree, but I think they're rarer than not any more.

I wouldn't say Aspie's are more or less likely to remain single. I think a lot of it depends on the individual, how their AS affects them, how "severe" their symptoms, their understanding of it and how they deal with it, among so many other factors. I know, and know of, quite a few Aspies (children to adults -- including family and close friends) who do have successful long-term relationships.

One thing I've noticed in all of these situations, is the awareness of their AS and the ability of both partners to communicate.

I have a 17 year old son with Aspergers. With the proper treatment he is fine and an A student. He has no problems with dating or having an active social life. I think that maybe your friend is suffering from more than Aspergers or he is not receiving proper treatment. Is he a close enough friend that you could ask him if he is taking his medication properly? The reason "aspies"..as you call them, don't like school is because school doesn't like them. They are usually not accepted by others, and the system tends to overlook their needs.

Frequently, depending on the degree of AS.

At first they diagnosed my son with PDD now its no longer used and never will be again. PDD stand ed for Pervasive developmental disorder." ADHD"- Autism and tourette syndrome and asperger's syndrome now its Asperger's syndrome and autism spectrum. They really don't know what to call it anymore but he defiantly need s some additional help and medication to calm him down a little. email me if you need any help. I'm here.

I'm an Aspie, and I hated school, too. See Asperger's Syndrome, in section 21, at http://www.ezy-build.net.nz/~shaneris and print/refer him, also advising him to see section 9, and try the www.nolongerlonely.com website, as well as getting professional treatment, to increase social skills, and social cue recognition. Tourette's involves facial tics.

I had the same problems when I started college....trying to conform to the "normal" freshman schedules, etc. When I took charge of my classes, limited myself to one or two different core subjects a semester so I could really get into the subjects(writing & English, and a Math course) and not committing to a major for 2 years, trying electives from several different areas, I took off! I started with 18 cerdit hours (that were all failed) to taking the minimum to stay "enrolled." I went from failing EVERY class for 2 semesters to a straight A average for 4 years (yes, it took me 6 years to finish my degree, but I graduated *** laude, and learned sooooo much more!)

As far as dating & marriage, I am now married & very happy. My brother didn't start dating until he was 18 & his first date was his first steady girlfriend & is still his first & only wife! Aspies tend to know what they want & what they don't & don't waste time on things that aren't "right"

Problems in school are very common for people with AS. It sounds like your friend needs more support. He should talk to student services. Many people with AS stay single. Some, like Temple Grandin, are not interested in forming relationships. Most would like to have a relationship but lack the social skills. Those who marry often marry others with AS. (see the movie Mozart and the Whale, based on a true story)
