ADHD help?

My 7 year old son has ADHD. He is on concerta and I also control his behavior with the Fiengold diet. The fiengold diet just means that he eats organic, fresh foods. Does anybody know of a doctor in the Atlanta, Georgia area that specializes in ADHD? Can anybody share methods that they have used in treating ADHD that has been successful?

I can't help you with doctors in the Atlanta area, but I'd recommend starting with getting recommendations from your insurance company and the child's pediatrician.

Having ADHD reminds me of being poor: you know the old saying that the rich get richer and the poor get poorer? Well, kids with ADHD are already behind the 8-ball and it gets harder as time goes on. Not to discourage you, but actually to help get you ready for the challenges you and he will face, you will need to be his strongest advocate for the next 10 or so years. But you are not alone, and it could have been worse.

Some suggestions I have are:

Share his diagnosis with his school, and make sure he gets all the accommodations he needs (such as preferential seating in ALL of his classrooms; extra time to take tests; added explanations for school work; gentle reminders to stay on task; rewards for good behavior - but little or no punishment for impulsiveness). Also, ask the school if they have any groups for social skills and interactions (some do a "lunch bunch" or other groups especially for ADHD kids).

Make sure he regularly sees the qualified therapist you choose for support. This will not only help keep his self-esteem up there, it will teach him not to be afraid to seek this kind of help when he's older.

If he likes sports, make sure he is in some sport year-round.

Don't worry about the growth thing; ask your doctor or Yahoo! community on how to keep his weight up if he's losing it (eg, higher calorie foods at times of the day when he eats more; focusing on the meals and foods and gimics he loves...)

Try to make your home as comfortable and predictable as possible: have a portable bin to keep all the things he needs for homework in one place, and be aware that kids with ADHD often like to change places where they do their homework; try your best to keep to a schedule of things like gettting up, bathing, changing, eating, visiting, etc.; be as consistent as you possibly can with rewards (go heavy) and punishments (go lighter - and never physical)...)

Read the following books:
1) The ADHD Answer Book (Top 275+ questions...) by Susan Ashley, PhD
2) Taking Charge of ADHD by Russell Barkley

Don't fall for quackery. It's everywhere. Prescription medication is the only scientifically proven therapy, but various web sites will try to convince you otherwise. Neurofeedback has yet to be proven or disproven, and it is extremely expensive. A good diet is helpful for anyone.

Best wishes in your journey, and know that you are in good company!
