ADHD and dating...?

Has anyone here ever dated a person with ADHD. This guy i've been getting close to has it, and while he seems to have a pretty good handle on things, (were both in college and he's doing well) Sometimes it's tought to keep up with him. I get confused because he startes to talk really fast and I can't always follow his train of thought. And I have to ask him to stop and go back and explain himself. I know it's not a huge deal, I'm just wondering if anyone here has ever been in a relationship with some one with ADHD and how it affected that relationship or how they delt with it?

He dosen't take medication. He hasn't since early highschool. He says that he dosen't like the way it make him feel and that he's not himself when he's on it, it changes his personality. And I definetly don't want him to change his personality!

My husband has ADHD and used to take and then abuse prescription stimulants. He sometimes gets a little hyper, but I find it more amusing and fun than confusing. The only thing that annoys me occurs when he goes off into his own little world and I can try anything to get his attention, but until he wants to stop doing what he's doing, he won't. I just want to smack him out of it sometimes!!

When studying, it's hard because he'll try to study and then go off and talk talk talk and I'll have to say, "You're giving me ADHD!" or "You are really adhding right now" He's not overly sensative about it. I mean, after so many years how could he? He does well in school too.

If your boyfriend is confusing you, it's okay to just stop him and tell him to slow down.

As for the meds, there are meds, but a lot of people with ADHD either enjoy the meds for a high and/or hate them except when absolutely needed like for school work.

I haven't dated anyone like that that I know of. My daughter is 10 and has ADHD and isn't on medication for it. I have noticed that she is really impulsive and does things without thinking it through.

Good luck!

Well, people with ADHD can take pills for it. So if he gets out of control, recommend him to get pills.
Think of it as a challenge.
Also, they tend to be funner people, so your at an advantage.

For one, if he has a short attention span... welcome to the male psyche. Also, if he eats a lot of sugar or sugar loaded foods, or caffeine, it is a potential culprit.

Getting someone like this to stay on task or on topic is a challenge.

I know somebody with ADHD, and I definitely admit it is a real challenge at times to keep up with her because she talks so quickly. Since I first met her, though, she has undergone some medication changes which seem to make this just a little more manageable for both her and me. I agree with the other poster, though, who said that many people with ADHD tend to be a bit impulsive so this is something to be on the lookout for.

sorry honey, I'm one of those other people. Have you asked him when he gets going why he doesn't check it down to a lower gear ?
simply put, why doesn't he control his impulses ? It is possible. I know I've had a more serious problem than him.
I did go on depakote for a year to control seizure activity in my brain. Now ? Most people would doubt I ever had a problem.
I just learned to recognize the onset of increased activity and would ask myself if there is something I need to do. And when the answer is no, I ask myself why I'm not relaxing.
But then, I do watch what I eat as certain foods do set it off. High carb diet seems to help it along. More sugar basically.
and if he can't learn to control it, you will tire of it yourself.
