Recently diagnosed ADHD... what should I do now?

My psychologist recently diagnosed me with ADHD and advised me to talk to my medical doctor about medication options. I was raised with the idea that ADHD is a crock and just another way for the medical professionals to make money. I feel torn, because my husband is encouraging me to take the meds, but my family is telling me to forget the pills because I'm just fine without them. I have a huge problem finishing things and focussing and it makes sense that I have ADHD; I think it might be holding me back from accomplishing great things. But, I dont know about meds. Any insights?

First of , rejoice in the fact that your difficulties have a name! When all the times you questioned your intelligence because of ADHD, all the times you've frustrated yourself and maybe others because stuff just didn't get done, for the depression and anxiety it must've given you....right? I'd say listen to your husband. He knows you best and has your best interest at heart. Family has a way of sticking their two cents in in the name of love, but are sometimes clueless. Try a med. Use the internet to find options or inclusions. I have some form of hereditary anxiety/depression..thanks ma. My mom refuses antidepressents and uses downers and visits the E.R. way too often. My sis uses alcohol and meth. My aunt has the ceiling of her mobile home wallpapered in aluminum foil. I take one antidepressent a day to help with seratonin flow to brain. I do breathing exercises for tension. I keep myself educated on my condition. And I'm pretty much a happy camper. And I've never in my forty eight years felt better. Give it a shot and use homeopathic methods combined. I think you'll be glad you did!

See another doctor and get a second opinion before you do anything else. Once you are labeled as ADHD, it is with you for life. Make sure before you act.

My Daughter has ADHD is 11 and cannot do without them at all,she is a live wire without them and very Argumentative towards me ,she is disliked without them.

I think you'll do fine without the usual pharmaceutical pills. These usually have side effects worse than the symptoms they treat. And most treat only symptoms, not the root cause. The ADHD pills only treat symptoms. Talk to your doctor to make your husband feel happy.

I'd say you're right about feeling ambivalent about taking meds. Your husband should not force you to take them if you don't want to. Seek alternative and natural means such as eating proper foods free from hormones, pesticides, and animal by-products, i.e., eat organic foods. And meditate to focus your mind. I have the same problem with focus, but eating right and practicing to focus and meditate helps. I never talked to a psychologist, but I probably have what they call a mild case of ADHD. I think it can be cured without the prescribed medicines. A lot of diseases can be cured without the modern medicines, if people eat right, exercise, and live a balanced and hormone and pesticide free lifestyle.
