Diabetic Questions (2) My blood sugar levels average between 160 to 230, I am currently taking Glipzide...?

pill in the am with breakfast... my values seem to get higher as the day goes on. Yes I am sure I should get back with my doc as he will probably suggest I take another in the afternoons...My question is at what point do they put you on insulin? What constitutes needing to go from pills to insulin? My blood sugar rises when I least expect it too...so I just wonder? I should say, that I am working to change my diet but it is a little slow in coming. I have just begun instituing negative calorie foods and it is helping. I am constantly craving sweets though. I didn't used to? Sounds weird, my sugar is high and I am craving sweets, what ever happened to listening to your body? I need to add My dad suffered from diabetes, it caused him major heart damage very young...many operations in his poor life... he's passed now, so I can't ask him these questions... I am 34. --reiterating main question..... what constitutes needing to be on insulin?

If you can't keep your blood values under 200 with consistancy, then they will put you on insulin. But the new stuff is NOT like the old. It's man made ( not animal ) easier to control and you don't have to put it in the fridge.
You need to eat smaller portions, more frequently, yes I know that sounds backwards, but stay away from CARBS. (sugar, potatoes, crackers, bread, candy, rice...) protein, fresh fruits and veggies are your friends now. Hard cheeses (cheddar, etc), meat of all kinds, fresh fruit (not canned or in jars in syrup), veggies (try to stay from too much salt).
Sweet potatoes in moderation. (white potatoes are a no, no...)
Exercise, but don't get overheated and remember to drink water..(not gatorade or fruit juice).
If you like chocolate...remember DARK = less carbs...(learn to read the back of packages)
1/4 cup of semi-sweet chocolate chips = 9 gms of carbs...GOOD...put some unsalted nuts with them and you have a snack.(like trail mix without the sugar).
If you like/can tolerate soy...thats good for you too...1% milk..is great. Anything with HIGH natural grain content. (remember to keep reading the labels on the back...)
Your Dr can get you into Diabetic nutrition class if you need it...
(or go to www.webmd.com or try the american diabetic association.)

and crave chocolate! So let me know if you can anymore cheapie fast eating ideas as I hate big recipes with alot of fluff. Thanks! Report It

Are you only taking Glipizide? What is your current dose? What was your last Hemoglobin a1c?
Your doctor still has many medications that he/she could use: Glucophage, Actos or Avandia, Prandin. As long as your body is responding to oral hypoglycemic drugs and your blood glucose is controlled, there should be no need to put you on subcutaneous insulin.
Well controlled blood glucose will help you prevent diabetic retinopathy, neuropathies, kidney failure, and a host of related conditions.

No offense, but why aren't you seeing your doctor about this?

I know that there are some diabetes medications that actually increase your appetite, and that may be why you have cravings. You could ask your doctor.
--And about your values getting higher as the day progresses... I read that fatigue and stress also decreases your body's ability to use glucose.
... But about your main question, I don't know. But if you have insulin-resistant diabetes, your body does not respond well to insulin.

only your doctor can help you.. see your doctor soon.. I just got an Ultra smart meter You can do so much with it and take the findings to your doctor . Life scan will send the soft ware free.. Others charge for it.My merter was free for buying the strips

There are other meds that work better than glipizide. You have a few more meds before you have to worry about insulin. Doctors prescribe insulin if the blood sugar cannot be controlled by diet and meds or if you get pregnant. Insulin is a last resort type drug.

Do yourself a favor and research a ketogenic diet. Eat foods low on the glycemic index.
