How important are chest, back, and shoulder muscles for arm strength? |
Compared to just working out the biceps and triceps, how much more overall arm strength would strong pectorals, deltoids, etc. add? These muscles are critical for stabilizing the shoulder joint and spinal column. Biceps and triceps are primarily involved in flexion and extension around the elbow joint, respectively. They do little to promote shoulder extension, abduction, adduction or flexion. You can have the buffest biceps in the world, for example, but without strong lats you're going to have trouble with a pull-up. As in all things: balance, balance, balance. The body needs balanced growth. Chest, back and shoulders are core structures and can usually be worked at the same time as biceps/triceps. Quite important. Chest, back, and shoulder strength support arm strength. Think of it this way. A steel I-beam can support a lot of weight. But if that I-beam is sitting on a set of balsa wood saw horses, it can't support much at all. It's the entire "package" that has to be strong. |
