Is 'sucking in' bad for one's health?


I was thinking about how sometimes girls (and guys) want to kinda make it seem like they dont have a belly, by sucking in. I know it happens naturally when one stands uup straight, the stomach area kind of flattens out. But to suck in, are there any risks of injury, like back problems, respritory problems, organs?

I think I read it in a comic once a guy was going to a beach and was sucking in his gut, and his freind asked why he didnt just exercize. The guy said that sucking in the entire walk around the beach was like doing a really long crunch. I though I would add that. :]

Here's some impirical wisdom. I have been on the large side all my life. At some point in time..If memory serves around 21 or so..I started "sucking it in'. At 1st it involved a conscious effort on my part. After a while..it became my "natural state' if you will. I'm now 47 and have had a ton of regular 'life' injuries due to work and play. Back busted, broken ribs...etc., etc.

Throughout it all..one thing almost all the docs made mention of was my incredibly strong and developed abdominal muscles. In the case of my back injuries 2 doctors said "if it wasn't for the strength of your abdominal muscles you'd have been in a lot more dire straits", they went on to say.."your stomach, and it's muscles, are the front of your back so they play a role in it's health". When quired as to what regimen I'd adhered to in order to develop this muscled abdomen...I could only respond with.."sucking it in all the time I guess".
Mind you..I'm still portly...and I don't have a six-pack..but what I do have there is extremely strong and well developed.
I can only attribute that to my years of "sucking it in".
So..I guess I can say without fear of contradiction it does no harm to suck it in

I think it's good for your stomach muscles, but don't know for sure.

No its not bad for your health its basically taking a deep breath that is extra deep.

You're holding your stomach muscles in so it's helping to tighten them.

try flexing ur abdomin instead of sucking in that will work out the abs or just do sit ups
