Adult ADD - How can I get through difficult reading material?

I am in desperate need of help. I am currently getting ready to begin my EMT-Paramedic course and I simply cannot focus on the material. I wasn't able to focus on the EMT-Basic stuff either. I have been like this since a child and I have been diagnosed with severe adult ADD. However, I am perfectly happy with the way I am. I don't mind having ADD, it makes me feel good most of the time. However for the next year I really need to do this and I just can't focus on the book. 3 pages and I am down and out, don't care what the consequences are. My doctor tells me to take medication but I do not believe him that it will get any better... I just think I am lazy, even though I have been diagnosed with ADD. I know it's not true though. GRR, What I am trying to say is..... how can I get through this? Can I take medication, will it work instantly like in the film Thumbsucker and just use it for 1 year, then will I go back to the person I was before after I stop taking it? What about caffine? HELP

Yes you have the option to medicate yourself on an as needed basis, depending on what med you are taking. If you are on a stimulant like Adderall, Dextroamphetamine or Methylphenidate then the effects will kick in quickly and not last too long. I am going to get medicated, because I hear that it helps ALOT with focus. I had the same problem when I was in college. Reading was almost impossible for me. I would read page after page and not really know what I had just read. I found that If I was in a completely quiet room with nothing to distract me that I did a better job, but It was still very hard for me!

Maybe you got into the wrong work.

I have ADD and do not take meds. And reading is torture for me - however, when I absolutely had to do it - I took a highlighter and highlighted the important stuff. This one, helps you stay focused, two gives you something to do other than just plain read. Good Luck!
