What is ADD?

I met my counselor for the first time last Tuesday, and he told me that I have ADD. He explained how he realized that and what ADD is but he really didn't explain it in a way I understood it.
What is ADD? What does it do? Can it be treated without medication??

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is generally considered to be a developmental disorder, largely neurological in nature, affecting 3鈥? percent of the population. The disorder is characterized by a persistent pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity.ADHD initially appears in childhood and manifests itself with symptoms such as hyperactivity, forgetfulness, poor impulse control, and distractibility. ADHD is currently considered to be a persistent and chronic condition for which no medical cure is available. ADHD is most commonly diagnosed in children and, over the past decade, has been increasingly diagnosed in adults. It is believed that around 60% of children diagnosed with ADHD retain the disorder as adults. Studies show that there is a familial transmission of the disorder which does not occur through adoptive relationships. Twin studies indicate that the disorder is highly heritable and that genetics contribute for about three quarters of the total ADHD population.

attention deficit disorder, cant pay attention for long periods of time

attention deficit disorder not able to focus on anything and concentrate

ADD, attention defisite disorder, is an illness in which the chemicals in your brain to not create the right amount of natural stimulants that basically control your focus.

Put in short, you can't focus on one thing for more than a minute or two without getting distracted. Surely you would notice this if you actually do have ADD.

I guess that a lot of therapy would help with your problem, but really, the meds are the only way to go. The three most common ones are Ritalin, Adderall, and Concerta. All three have been proven effective, and depending on what your counseler says, you will probably be prescribed one of them.

There are some side effects, such as loss of appetite, insomnia, nervousness, excessive chatting, and so on, but it's worth it. Plus, these side effects won't be very noticeable if you actually have the condition.

Best wishes.

Attention deficit disorder is characterized by inattention, hyperactivity and impulsiveness.

There is no cure for ADD/ADHD, however, there are a number of treatment options that help to decrease the symptoms and improve the lives of those with ADD/ADHD. Traditional treatment includes a combination of medication and behavioral therapy, and educational interventions when needed.

Attention Deficit Disorder.

You cant keep your mind on one thing. I confuse multitasking with this, but if you cant read a book page without interrupting yourslef, you probably have ADD.
