ADD College student needs your help!? |
I think you can only answer this question if you have or know about ADHD / ADD. I can't be bothered to explain what it is.I am a 24 year old female college student. As someone with ADD school was not an easy place for me which is why I have only just returned to education. I have got a support teacher (a few hours 1:1 every week) but when she asked me how she can help me I was completely stumped. Has anyone got any suggestions? I totally disagree with matt. Although the medications have helped his friend, they usually do more harm than good. Their side effects alone can really screw you up. Most of them are basically some form of amphetamine and your body simply doesn't do well when it's always on these drugs. Doctors are quick to prescribe it mostly because it's big money for them and pharmaceutical companies. I'd stay away from the medications, you're not the same person when you're on them. ADHD has more to do with not having yourself disciplined and trained to complete tasks. To combat this you just have to teach yourself to have a daily schedule. It is very hard to do this and to keep on the schedule at first, but once you start to see the results of having everything planned out, you will realize that it makes your whole life easier. It decreases anxiety and gives you time to do things that you really want to do. I recommend that you write down everything you have to do or would like to get done for the day. Then you prioritize it you put all the things that absolutely must get done at the top and the things that you can always do later at the bottom. When you write it down you will realize where your priorities really are. You might realize that some of them might not be in the right place and you will have to really work on that. But the hard part is really making sure everything is written down, you might want to just skip some days, but you can't do that. When you skip days you have to start back at square one. This skill doesn't just apply to people who are diagnosed with ADD/ADHD, but to everyone. What do you hope to achieve by going to college? She can help you in different ways. Establish a schedule. A schedule of what time you go to bed, what time you get up, what time you have breakfast, and what time you get to class. Plan out your day as far as possible, set up an alarm preferably on your cell phone or watch so that you are reminded that you are getting late. Ask your teacher to call up on the weekends(if she can) on schools nights when you have to submit important papers and before exams. This is so she can counsel you, or remind you or simply calm you down before these important events. ADD/ADHD is tough especially on students. But you can get through it! Whats important is to remember your priorities and to preplan always. Work hard and you can get through college! You got here didnt you :-) All the best dear! Are you taking meds for this? That would be my first suggestion. I have a very good friend who struggled his whole life until he got on Stratera. Now he is totally different and it's amazing to see the difference. The key for you is to plan ahead and stay organized. You need to develop a daily schedule for yourself. What you're going to do from morning until bedtime. This will help give you time to focus on getting everything done. I would recommend getting an organizer you can carry around. This will help you tremdously with accomplishing daily goals. But seriously, if you are not on meds, this is going to be a constant struggle for you. If you are on meds and still struggling then see a different doctor because there are several products out there that can help you. Ever tried herbal supplements for your condition? There's this popular natural remedy called Focus that has worked well for many ADD patients. It's an all natural formula so you won't get the side effects pertinent to say Ritalin or Dexedrine. Centella asiatica is a major herb formulated into Focus known to enhance brain function and reduce anxiety. Also integrated into the formula is the tonic herb Rosemary and Panax Ginseng, which is a popular energy booster. Herbal supplements when complemented by proper nutrition and motivation might just work to calm your symptoms. For more info, browse the links below. |
