Non-medical treatments for ADD?

Hey, i'm wondering if anyone knows anything that can be done to help ADD before trying medicine. My problem is that im 16, and i REALLY think i have ADD (and trust me, i'm about as opposite as you can be from being a hypochondriac), but my mom doesn't "believe" in ADD; i've tried talking to her about problems I have with concentrating and school, and instead of listening she goes and makes fun of me to other people, and thinks i'm just lazy. Trust me, i'm not lazy, i've been having problems for about two years now, and as my schoolwork becomes harder and less interesting(haha) it's becoming nearly impossible for me to get things done, and i know the worse i do in school now the more my life will be ruined later on. I know most of you are just going to think i'm lazy, but if anyone who has ADD can commiserate with me on this it would be very much appreciated.

It's important that you not try to self-diagnose. There could be a number of causes for your symptoms.

Given your mother's responses already, I suggest you approach a counselor in school and relate your concerns. I'm willing to bet that your school has a list of physicians they refer students to and believe me, a school administrator will be more effective in getting your mother to act.

Try to change your diet, many ADD and ADHD cases are brought on by eating too much colours and preservatives. Try to eat natural foods and see if this works, otherwise you could speak to a natropath and see if they could recommend any other non-drug treatments.

Good luck
