Tips for college students with ADD/ADHD?

Does anyone have any advice on how to overcome ADD symptoms so I can become a more succesful and intellignet student as well as a well-balanced individual? It is often times very overwhelming and challenging for me to balance the academics, student clubs, jobs & internships, sporting events, and even a social life. The workload is so much that I get mentally fatigued from finishing it. As a result, I forget other things that I need to do and miss out on a lot. I go to the University of Maryland and unfortunately thry don't have many resources for students with ADD as opposed to other universities such as Washington University in St. Louis and the University of Arizona, schools that offer a lot of resources for ADD/ADHD students. So I am kind of on my own to figure out ways to overcome the symptoms of ADD. And believe me, it's not an easy task. Otherwise I wouldn't be posting this question.

If you suspect you have ADHD then you need to talk to your doctor. They will recommend a psychologist or a psychiatrist to test you. Between your doc and psyc you can find a diagnosis that fits you. It may be ADHD, it may be something else and it may be ADHD and something else but you have to know that first. Do not take any drugs (legal or not) that have been handed to you by a pharmacist as that could ruin your life.

If you have ADHD then your doc will help you find the right medication for you. If you find the right medication then it will seem like a magic pill but sometime after that you will realize that it isn't going to fix everything.

To treat ADHD, I think you need to treat your internal chemsistry, diet and external interactions. The internal chemistry is the medication to help you control your attention but controversial. I take Adderall and it helps a lot. Know how you body reacts to foods and other stuff (caffeine, vitamins, alcohol, etc.). There is some good advice about that in reputable books (less so on the web).

Finally, you have to engineer your world to let your ADHD be an advantage. For example, I have to have an electronic day planner on my belt that syncs with my calender or I will forget key appointments and procrastinate calling people because I will get distracted while trying to find their number. I refuse to take meetings notes for the team. My handwriting is terrible and only about the first 3 lines of my paper are used at the end of a two hour meeting. There are jobs for us out there but you have to seek one that an ADHD person can do well at and not one that we are doomed to be fired from (look up "hunters and farmers and ADHD"). All 3 may be necessary to succeed.

Oh gosh, I am a college student with ADHD and would love to know too.

Do you take any medication for your ADD? I take Adderall and it helps me concentrate.

Find a good Natriopath. There are probably a lot of things contributing to your symptoms. A good one will help you function properly! I speak from experience.

ADD/ADHD is over diagnosed.

First of all modify your diet to eliminate white sugar, soda, artificial juices, preservatives, food dyes, and concentrate on providing your body what it is deficient in.

Typically phytochemicals found in fruits and vegetables,
phytosterols for a balanced endocrine system (hormone support, we have 87),
a plant based vitamin/mineral supplement and of course glyconutrients. Harper's Biochemistry has this information in the chapter entitled Glycoproteins.

If you are on medication ask yourself if you were born with a deficiency of the med or are you deficient in vital nutrients your body needs.

You may wish to evaluate your activities to determine if you have to much on your plate.

Alleviating symptoms does not address the cause. Time to learn how to think differently regarding health issues. Drug companies and clueless doctors know very little about nutrition but are quick to diagnose a condition that is actually a series of symptoms and provide you with a drug that has side effects, can not be assimilated as food and are often addictive and leave you to go about your way.

The only type of doctor that is qualified to diagnose ADD would be a pediatric psychiatrist or adult psychiatrist. Everyone else is diagnosing out of a box of Cracker Jacks!

Interestingly enough, every child I have treated that has been diagnosed with ADD/ADHD, Bipolar, etc. have all had their childhood immunizations. Coincidence? We'll never know thanks to the pharmaceutical industry having immunity from prosecution. For now.

I`m a 48 year old construction worker with ADHD. I had to make the choice of what is most important in my life,to become distracted or be successful in my work. I stopped the medication and I make myself pay attention. You have to get a grip on the way things work. No one will feel sorry for us and give us a break.Medicating ourselves does not work.We have a special power that we need to learn control.I started at the bottom and now people that I worked for now work for me.You are not cursed but blessed, learn to use your great gift.
