Did ADD disappear?

When I was in elementary school, the popular disorder that teachers and doctors liked to plague children with was ADD (attention deficit disorder.) Now, all I hear about is ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.) Does ADD not exist anymore?

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is the most common mental illness in pediatric patients, affecting approximately 5% of all children. This is a very recent study and remember that you have children that are slightly overactive and a little amped and then you have severe cases in which the child without medicine is most likely going to hurt himself or others. ADHD AND ADD are not the same if you look them up in the DSM they do share some of the same criterion but the are different

same thing. although hopefully people realized that it was normal for a kid to have a short attention span. this is an "epidemic" that never caught up in other countries. makes me mad that a whole generation was on amphetamins, some of them can't do without, now. insane.

I think ADD at that time was just the flavor of the time. Scientist and doctors always need something to harp on and something to study. If they have nothing to study, then they miss out on the millions of grant money. Its kinda like how coffee is bad for you one week, and good for you the next. Same with eggs, etc... I think these people do it to keep themselves busy and employed.

Trust me, after years of teaching, ADHD is a real problem in the classroom. Experienced teachers can spot it. I'm ADHD, although when I went to school, they hadn't come up with a name for it. They stuck us in special ed. and called us dummies. My 12 year old son is also ADHD. He is extremely bright, ut when he is not on his medicine everyone can tell the difference. If he goes a day without it, he literally bounces off the walls. There's a big difference in a kid who doesn't pay attention, lets his mind wonder, and one that can't do it. All kids have short attention spans at times, but an ADHD kid is not able to concentrate.

add and adhd are the same but the add does not have the hyperactivity. It is sadly very real. Children in school find it difficult to focus on their work. They cannot keep their focus on task. With the hyperactivity they cannot sit for any length of time because they need to be busy. It is very difficult to deal with this. Medication does help. They are now reasearching to find the cause because it seems to have become more prevalent.

no ADD is still a disorder it seem less used, it refers to the attention span and comprehension problems with out he hyperactivity component. Frequently the term is now written as A.D./H.D. as opposed to A.D.D. and A.D.H.D as in inclusive term.

Anyone who does not believe that ADD and ADHD exists obviously does not work in the school system. Yes some children just need more activity. With recesses being taken out of the day, students are going to act up more because they can't release their excess energy but that is not always the case.

Here are some websites that you can find more information on the subjects.

You know it really makes me frustrated that many people don't believe just how many kids suffer from ADHD/ADD. Especially since it can be very heredity. My younger two have it. My second son has ADD and my youngest has ADHD and when they don't have their meds boy can you tell.

Heck even with his meds my youngest is still really hyper, just not as much. I pretty much call him a squirrel monkey as that is what he reminds me of as he bounces off the walls.
