Should I be taking protein even though I want to lose weight?

I'm trying to lose weight right now but still want to get pretty big as far as muscle is concerned. I work out 4 to 5x a week and take about 40 to 60grams of protein. The only thing I can do right now is walk about 3 miles twice a week at the moment because I recently had ACL surgery. Do you think I should cut down my protein for the time being because it'll make me fat? The only thing I can do for cardio is lift lower weight more times. I won't be able to run til March and I want to lose about 20lbs at least before september.

2 things for you.
1. In your exercise, since you're hurt in the legs, try swimming alot if you have access to a pool regularly, and if your leg can't handle much of it, try using mostly arms to propel yourself (or tread water w/arms only). Great aerobic workout w/low stress on legs.
2. Target is 75g of protein per day (about a can of Tuna). Try starting off the day w/ 1/2 cup dry oatmeal (cook 1/2 cup oatmeal, 1 cup water, 5 minutes on 50% power in microwave). Eat this WITHOUT adding any sugar or sweetener, then follow it with a banana or apple (you'll be surprised how sweet they taste after unsweetened oatmeal). I've cut 10-15 pounds in less than 2 weeks on this breakfast shift alone.

Don't look at cutting protein specifically, look at the right target for Protein, Carbs and Fat for your day. You need some of each, and your body engine doesn't run well when it's only using only one or two of the three.

Recommended book- Eat to Win for the 21st Century by Robert Haas. He's the guy that kept Martina Navrotolova (sp?) going strong into her older age, through better nutrition.

no, protein won't make you fat, it'll help repair your damaged tissues. Fat and sugar will make you fat. eat a good balanced diet - you'll be OK

The more muscle you have, the more calories your body will burn per day. So, I would take protein, then just watch the fat burn off. (Your body burns fat up to five days longer doing weights than cardio)

You need a certain amount of protein for the growth and repare of cells.
But you need to take extra (protein shakes and stuff) only if you are into bodybuilding and weightlifting- its makes your muscles grow fast

i would keep taking it because you are working out still. from march to sept is plenty of time to lose 20lbs. maybe instead of running, could you do a bike. check out some supps to get at bodybuilding.com. im taking lipo6, and protein shakes and bars. NO-EXPLODE works well too.

u need not eating so much protein pills as any cereal food has plenty of protein.don't take so much fat food but eggs n beans r okay.keep on ur exercise even though u had the surgery recently.good luck.

best wishes.
